this book is TOO CUTE! It was a gift for my friend's child, but I read it, made my husband read it, and then my sister too. It's clearly meant to entertain adults ...see "navel academy". Her illustrations are fun and show her talent since it's somewhat unusual to have an author illustrate her own book.

I loved it... There nothing to fear about harpers I like this poem: "The little queen all golden Flew hissing at the sea. To stop each wave Her clutch to save She ventured bravevely. "As she attacked the sea in rage A holderman came nigh Along the sand Fishnet in hand And saw the queen midsky. "He stared at her in wonder For often he'd been told That such as she Could never be Who hovered there, bright gold. This book is a true representation of Russia during the Communism reign. I went to Leningrad and Moscow on a school tour in 1981 and reading this book flooded my mind with memories. Leningrad is described exactly like I remember it. The chandeliers in the underground Metro station, the line-ups on the streets, the crazy line-ups in the stores which stock nothing, right down to the foil wrapping on the chocolate bars. A great book to get a feel for Russia in the time preceding the fall of Communism, a country that is dear to my heart.

I am not one to read classical books, pretty much if it isn't geared towards todays teenagers it is probably over my head. But Jen said she was liking it so I thought I would give it a try. It was really hard for me a first to get into with the language but I kept with it and I really enjoyed it! The story was good and I really wanted to know what was going to happen next the entire way through the book. Once I got use to the language it was actually a pretty easy read.
