This was great. How heroic and inspirational considering the times.

Running with Scissors became so ridiculous and disgusting that it was difficult to read. Maybe I would have liked the book a little better if I had never read anything by David Sedaris, because Augusten Burroughs' style reminded me of his, but way watered down and lacking the comedic talent. There were a lot of interesting moments, though, to say the least.

Firelight was a beautifully written "star-crossed lovers" tale. I drank it up. Sophie Jordan's writing in this was spot on. I saw everything as if I were watching a film. I loved the story line. I love that it was about dragons instead of the recently popular vampire and werewolf stories. I love that it is different, and that they give in to temptation instead of fighting it through the whole story. I fell in love with Will from the moment he dived into that pool. This is a must-read.

I couldn't put this book down once I started. Sascha is a Psy, a race of powerful psychics who have conditioned themselves against feeling emotion so as to eliminate violence. Despite the conditioning, Sascha feels emotion very strongly and is terrified of discovery and rehabilitation (mental death). Lucas is a were-leopard she is working with on a business project, but his real motives are to penetrate Psy society and glean information about a Psy serial killer who is killing changeling women. This book had surprisingly strong sci-fi elements considering that it's partially about changelings. Sascha and Lucas have decent chemistry, but what I found most compelling was Silence, the conditioning program. It's a great idea. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Most depressing book I've ever read. Oprah, your sucky-ass book club picks another winner. Well written, just depressing. It made me want to put a fist through a window.

** spoiler alert ** It was an interesting book. Not what I expected, but I didn't really expect anything. I liked the way every chapter was a sort of short story, since my own books (so far) are like that too. Most of the characters were actually what one (or at least I) would expect from a high end British kids' book, actually. Charicatural, but with some actual depth. Peculiar, that's a good word. Of course I immediately liked Silas and I didn't like that he wasn't flat out called "vampire", but with all those other "vampire" books around lately, I can understand. He's a proper one, based in Dracula's tradition, not the sappy Twilight shit. Towards the end I got actually carried away with the tension and I thought it was a shame that Bod lost his "powers". He became a regular person. In the extras Neil mentions a possible sequel, but I can't really see how that's going to be interesting now Bod can't Fade or see ghosts anymore. One thing I didn't like so much was how mature the four-year-old boy was in his deeds and speech. There really was no difference between how he reacted in the first and last chapter, not in how he spoke, thought, moved etc. Missed chance to show even more character development, I think.

I liked this book. I read it with a purpose -how would this fit into my Middle School library - but ended up liking it quite a bit. There's nothing in this book that couldn't fit into my school, but I did find that the character's almost schizophrenic musings sometimes difficult to follow. His thoughts and actions were perfectly normal for his age group and for his circumstances, but something about the story was difficult to engage with. A good read though, and I'll be looking out for more by the author.

As a mother of a son with Asperger's syndrome nearly the same age as the main character, MOCKINGBIRD affected me in a profound and deeply personal way. There were tears in my eyes throughout nearly the entire book, not because the story is sad (though it is), but because I felt I was finally getting a glimpse at exactly what goes on in my son's head when often I don't have a clue. Caitlin is a girl just trying to make sense of her world, made even more difficult and confusing when her older brother is killed in a school shooting. She believes everything will be better once she finds closure - whatever or wherever closure is. When she finally understands the meaning of the word, when she finally Gets It, (pg 148-149) it's a very emotional moment of realization for Cailtin and the reader. I highly recommend MOCKINGBIRD to everyone, but especially those in direct contact with a child with autism or Asperger's syndrome, if only to experience what it's like to be in that child's shoes for a day. In my opinion, this book should be required reading for all teachers and school administrators.
