This was the third and most complex Dawkins book I read so far. For me it wasn't a easy read, truth be told I didn't really comprehend everything in it. As a earlier reviewer said of Dawkins first book, "The reader is warned that he must put on his mental running shoes", I would say the same is true for this book. But I did find The Blind Watchermaker highly interesting, and did understand and learn a thing or two. I especially enjoy and appreciate Dawkin's passion for science and truth. I look forward to the next Dawkins book (any recommendations?). In a nutshell, what Dawkins attempts to prove is that we don't need to postulate a designer in order to understand life, or anything else in the universe. Darwin's view, as is also the whole point of this book is that the theory of evolution by natural selection provides a non-miraculous account of the existence of complex adaptations. Pick up this book and good luck!

This is a really interesting read. Henrietta Lacks was a young black women who died from cervical cancer in the 1950's. Her cancerous cells were harvested by Johns Hopkins Medical Center after what served as informed consent at the time. They became the basis for most of the cell research done for the next 50 years. Her poor motherless children and husband lived for many years without any knowledge of the contribution that their mother/spouse made to medical research and of course, with no compensation. The book was researched by a medical journalist and she develops a very close but intimidating relationship with the family who are struggling with poverty, addiction, lack of medical coverage and mental illness. She does a very good job of giving us an insight into the family history and current surviving members. She also covers the science of the HeLa Cells in a very fascinating way. I found this book both moving and thought provoking. A great book for book club discussion.

I wish I could give this 4.5 stars, but I rounded up because I love this author. This book has more magical realism than I usually enjoy, but I loved it just the same. A normal guy, a bit on the boring and lazy side, has an adventure . . .

Granted, I know next to nothing about Bolivian literature, but this book seems to be a strong candidate for the title of "The Great Bolivian Novel." Sometimes comic, sometimes dramatic, and often poignant, this is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Bolivia, US immigration policy, or Latin American literature. It was eye-opening in many ways. This book is definitely not for everyone (see the one-star reviews), however. It's dark, graphic, and disturbing, and the narrator/main character is deeply flawed and not always likable. Sometimes it was hard for me to totally immerse myself in the book, which is why I withheld the fifth star. Overall, though, I enjoyed it and I'm interested in reading other books by the same author. In my opinion, it works both as entertaining mystery/noir style pulp fiction and as "Important Literature," which is an achievement itself. Note: I read the English translation.

Music is my savior, and I was maimed by rock and roll. I was maimed by rock and roll. I was tamed by rock and roll. I got my name from rock and roll.

Couple of stories worth it. The whole collection seemed unfocused. Maybe he is smarter than me.
