As is the trend for me and classic novels, it took me awhile to get through. But I'm glad I read it and overall really enjoyed it.

3 stars. Interesting story about a girl who finds out she was swapped for the real princess at birth in order to protect the true heir. That's just the starting point - the story involves magic, romance, friendship, and more. Some was very predictable to me, some was fresh and surprising. Not fantastic but I'd read more by this author.

I read Last Things in two days, actually lost sleep so I wouldn't have to put it down. Awesome first novel for Offill.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I read it in one sitting. Some books you read and walk away from with a feeling of disappointment, disgust, or a warm fuzzy- all brief. This one stays with you. As the title implies music has strong overtones in the book. I found the book a haunting melody that stayed with me for days. I found myself wanting more. It was the Unfinished Symphony for me. I wish there had been a way to prevent Michael's big secret from coming out before I read the book, but once I was engaged in the telling of the story, it did not matter as much. I enjoyed the intrigue of a novel with only two characters and one scene. It forced Syrie James to rely on character and dialogue- and she did not disappoint.

I have always loved this book, from when I first read it in tenth grade to now. Holden's voice is true and real, and in the end, the story's depth--and shallowness--reminds me of the way real people are.

A really amusing anthropological look at the English by an Englishwoman. Fox’s sense of humor is what really makes this book; it’s a bit long and repetitive at parts—skewing too much toward being an academic text when what I want (need) it to be is a work of popular science—but Fox’s own innate “Oh, come off it!” reaction always pulls through in the end. Somewhat frightening: how much of Fox’s “grammar of Englishness” I find applicable to myself—social awkwardness, humor, cynicism, belief in fair play… Bloody hell! Sodding, blimey, shagging, knickers, bollocks… Oh, God! I’m English!

This was definitely my favorite one...great story line. Even though I couldn't put it down and wanted to get finished I was sad that it was all finally over!

** spoiler alert ** I'm having trouble deciding where I stand with this book. When I love it, I love it to bits. When it pisses me off, I almost forget that I love the non-pissing-off parts. (And for the record, I was not PMSing whilst reading or reviewing this novel, so my anger is genuine and not hormonally-driven.) What I love about Struck: Electricity, and lots of it! The idea of cults. Post-disaster setting. Buying medicine on the black market. Danger, danger - high-voltage! What pisses me off about Struck: Insta-lust that quickly develops into insta-love. Mia finding her stalker hot. SPOILER ALERT! Mia awakens in the night to find someone standing over her with a knife. She dubs him Nightmare Boy. But this is not a dream. And she fancies him, loves him, and in the epilogue roots him. Oh yeah, then there's the whole "I've been dreaming about you for ages, before I met you" element. *headdesk* Then there's the matter of brainwashing, which in this novel is some kind of paranormal ability. I would've been more interested to read about the regular, non-paranormal craft of brainwashing, the kind you read about in psychology texts. Suddenly Mia likes the Prophet, then is "reawakened" by a kiss to bring her back to her previous way of thinking. Struck's premise is astoundingly awesome, the big White Tent climax is genuinely creepy, and I'm so looking forward to whatever Jennifer Bosworth writes next. Hopefully it'll have less romance, and more awesome. Meanwhile, I want to read up on the connection between electricity and humans - can you recommend a good text, please?
