You've read "A Christmas Carol," and you wonder if you would like Charles Dickens' longer works. Here's a test: How do you respond to the following sentence? It was a dull, grey, autumn day indeed and in a minute's pause and silence that took place, the leaves fell sorrowfully. If it makes you roll your eyes, you probably shouldn't read any more Dickens than you already have. If it brings a smile to your face, you might want to try one of the full-length novels. It's all a matter of taste. The above sentence appears early in "Dombey and Son," well before the reader realizes that the title is ironic. The book really is about Dombey and daughter, and Mr. Dombey's neglect of his daughter, who yearns so desperately for his love, makes this perhaps the most heartbreaking Charles Dickens novel I've read, and I think I've read most of them. I don't know if it's possible to hate a fictional character, but I felt something like hatred toward Mr. Dombey through much of the book. I also disliked the oily Mr. Carker the manager, a sycophant to the core; and Mrs. Skewton. The daughter, Florence Dombey, epitomizes grace. There's a similar character in many of Dickens' novels, growing from a noble child to an equally noble young adult. Florence might exceed all the rest. I'm not sure if she's believable, but I certainly want to believe in her. Mr. Toots is pure comic relief, although I empathize with the poor fellow. The best Dickens name in "Dombey and Son" is given to a bit character who emerges almost at the end: the Reverend Melchisedech Howler. If I ever have a dog, that is what I'm going to name it. To the extent that Dombey and Son is a novel about a business, it's startlingly contemporary (there are even layoffs). Think AIG without the government bailout. "Dombey and Son" is not Dickens at his best (that would be "Bleak House"), but for those of us who smile at sentences about leaves falling sorrowfully, it's plenty good.
