This book is best described by the author: a coda to the Book of the New Sun (Shadow and Claw and Sword and Citadel, for brevity). It illuminates some of the mysteries of the series. (Hah, hah, of course not all of them, silly!) On the other hand, everything is too nearly wrapped up by the end - for this series, that is. While I didn't feel that Severian grew much as a character throughout the book, especially compared to his growth in the Book of the New Sun, I did end up liking him a lot more by the end. Maybe I just got used to him. (I still wouldn't want to hang out with him, though.) He also seems more reliable than previously, and a lot more straightforward. (view spoiler) Or it's entirely possible that I just missed his unreliability here. Unfortunately, that was a big part of what I liked in the first books. However, now that I'm liking him better as a character, I'm more excited at the prospect of re-reading the Book of the New Sun in the future. The other thing I miss in this book is the subtle way the world is described in the Book of the New Sun. In those books, Severian made many passing remarks about how things really were ((view spoiler)) that took me a while to actually pick up on. And that moment of realization when I did was awesome. Unfortunately, that's missing throughout the majority of the book. Instead, we are faced with Severian's moments of realization, which frankly aren't nearly as fun. The first half of the book takes place in a completely different setting, which I did not like as much. I was sucked back in once he returns to Urth ((view spoiler)). On a side note, the last line of the appendix made me laugh, simply because of my physics education: "..the thoughtful reader will find little difficulty in advancing at least one plausible speculation." Sounds like Gene Wolfe left it as an exercise for the reader. Overall, it feels like the plot in this book is too convenient. As before, it continues the cyclical nature of the series, in a big way. I'm glad to have read it for the insight it gives, but I wouldn't say that I enjoyed the majority of it. I am curious to find out just how many clues the Book of the New Sun actually has (and I am sure it has, indeed, many).
