The Last Echo is a gripping suspense-filled story that is an excellent addition to Kimberly Derting’s The Body Finder series. I wasn’t quite as into it as I was with Desires of the Dead, but I still really liked Violet – and Jay – a lot. Violet is a great character. She’s strong, but not overly confident in her strength. She’s got heart, too. And she struggles much the same way all (or maybe I should say most?) teens do, struggles with who she is, how she fits in, where she belongs. Probably my favorite thing about this book is that it is driven by the action. Driven by the search for the killer, Violet’s interactions with the team, and other things related to her special ability. We don’t have the too-often-in-YA-lit love triangle. You know, where the girl is in love with two guys and has to choose? Nope. Violet is Jay’s girl all the way. I really like that. It’s refreshing. I’m not sure why, but for some reason I thought this was the last book in the series. Perhaps part of it is the title – The Last Echo. Maybe. But, the end makes it clear that there is indeed more to come. Things are not quite what they seem, and Derting drops a bit of a bomb on her readers as she wraps up the story. I was quite surprised, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how that will affect future installments. Fans of The Body Finder series will be pleased with The Last Echo. Kimberly Derting does not disappoint. I can’t wait to see what more she has in store for her readers!

I read this book, based on lectures given at Columbia University in 1914, while taking Peter Maxwell's History of Ancient Philosophy at Loyola University Chicago. It is an excellent survey of the trends of Greek thought from the pre-Socratics to the rise of Christianity, presenting a cogent thesis as to the dynamics of this development.

I wish I could do half-stars on here, but I couldn't see my way to rounding up to give this one four. There were quite a few gems in this collection which absolutely fulfills its purpose of exploring the space between conventional genres. And it had me right up until about the last third of the book. I simply got lost out in the interstices by then. It's quite possibly more my failure than that of the collection, but still.

Fantastic novel, worthy of all of the praise his original novel gained. I could not put it down and read it in one weekend. It not only offers a beautiful fictional story about women growing up in Afghanistan, it also offers so much historical information that it is hard to believe what you are reading at some points.

Hush is one of the best Batman stories set in the "present" out there. Loeb is amazing. Volume 1 is the better of the two, but Volume 2 isn't too far behind.

Quite possibly the most over-hyped book of 2010. I had great expectations for this story, as I'm fascinated by the culture of polygamy. However, there's nothing new here. It's mainly tidbits ripped off from other, better sources, like HBO's Big Love. Attention-starved kids? Check. Competitive, boilerplate sister-wives? Check. Money issues? Check. Possible erectile dysfunction? You get the idea. Kind of a waste of time. There are a couple of tragic episodes related to the family which are heartbreaking and well-written, but those are the only parts worth reading.
