Coming of age story for a fourteen-year-old girl. Written in 1992 about Oklahoma during the Depression. Such a good story. So believable and so heart-warming. Dad sinks into a depression after losing one of his children. The author's handling of first person was less claustrophobic than so many first person novels I read lately. I loved the details of the setting, too: using the boards from the chicken house for the coffin, what they ate, what they grew in their garden, the stream that wasn’t red like the water further downstream.

This started off kind of slow. I was saying what is the point of this? Then it picked up and I liked it. It is quite gruesome in parts. I think I liked her first book better.

It's about Catholicism, and the Northeast and once the South, and boys and girls and the things they do to each other. I will be reading more Dubus, for sure.

Not her usual standard. Although I must admit I'm not a huge fan of short stories.

A good story full of suspense.

A sort of open-ended story of a lazy journalist who begins a new job at a Puerto Rican newspaper, who rarely writes anything of any substance and isn't passionate about much of anything except drinking. A depressing view of a apathetic wanderer who even though he occasionally sets meager goals for himself always dashes them completely.

I needed a hole to fill the VOID left by my consumption of the John Connolly Charlie Parker series. Luckily, Connolly has a new book coming out in September, The Burning Soul. Until then, I needed a detective series of substance. A character so cool, so awesome, that I could branch out from Charlie Parker into another series. I've actually had this book on my to-read list for several months now. I have no idea what took me so long to pick it up. I mean, it's not like Kemper, Dan or Stephen had been singing it's praises up and down Goodreads. What? They have? Oh. This is classic.. no wait, VINTAGE detective writing. Scudder is my type of character. He drinks a lot, he's suffering from self inflicted guilt and he has little patience for the public. This is a guy who has lived through a freak accident which in turn caused him to alienate his wife in asking for a divorce, distancing himself from his kids and quitting the force. He takes on cases which he identifies as "favors" for cash, which he identifies as "gifts". Sure, he tosses a couple of bucks to charity every now and then but he's pretty much a loner. He's like a hooker with a heart of gold. Did I just say that? Man, I'm really excited to dive into this series and really sink my teeth in. I devoured this is one day, which, for me (at least lately)is equivalent to the speed of light. I basically broke the sound barrier reading this thing I loved it that much. I actually picked up the second installment today and I intend to start on that ASAP.

While reading this book, I had a weird feeling that its first few chapters seemed familiar to me. As it turns out, I have read, at one point, a short story of Krauss' that was published by the New Yorker Magazine in 2004. Her novel possibly took off from the success and beauty of the short story. I don't blame her, Leo is lovable, and his story deserves to be told at length.

So glad this series is over. Among all stupid weak teenage characters in books, Ever is probably the worst I've encountered so far. Not only that this last book goes against everything that happened in the past 5 books (which never made sense to me, was it about having sex? seemed like the author finally realized that this theme was stupid and changed everything), but the characters instead of developing became more and more dislikable. And since I don't want to rant about Ever for the next 5 paragraphs, I will just end this by saying how grateful I am not to read another Ever book and if I could I would give it 0 stars, but since the scence in the past life was sort of different than the usual stuff going on in the books, I'll give it 1!
