I was glad to finally have closure on a storyline that has been dragging on for awhile. This book was so different for me than the others. Rachel was pretty much magically "out of commission" for most of the book and I missed reading about her kicking butt, but I still really liked it.

I try to approach each story in a way that will allow me to just sink into it and let it flow. Sometimes authors (and editors) slide stuff in there that just pull me right back out of the world. I struggled with my willing suspension of disbelief for this book. I consider it annoying when the author doesn't do any homework and just try to ram something through for the sake of making the story work. They don't have a background in something or they push things a smidgen just to fit the story - or they just get lazy. I consider it outright sloppy when the editor doesn't follow up on any of these things. That's the editor's job - and it impacts the story a great deal when these things lurch up and get in the way. Here's a great example: How many feet in a mile? Without looking anything up, it's in the ball park of five thousand feet. A mile. So why would the lobby of the opera house be described as "thousands of feet across"? Ten seconds on the net and I could tell you that the Sydney Opera House (you know, the *really big one* the fish keep making in Nemo) is about 650 feet across. I would have chalked it up to hyperbole or simply being descriptive but the author does it again when the story moves to the country club. Same idea, same lack of scale. Another example: an assassin that stabs somebody in the esophagus to kill them? That's called a stoma. Killing them in a matter of 2 seconds with this maneuver? Unlikely. Maybe they meant to go for the big artery in the neck that's right next to the esophagus. I'll let it slide for the sake of the story. Wait - she did it with a 2" screw stolen from a ping pong table and sharpened like a prison shiv? That she threw? I can't entirely blame the author on this one. Sure the author could have followed up on some of the stuff in there that was painfully obvious, but she was trying to crank out the story. The story has a direction and a reasonable plot. I personally don't think the characters were deeper than a puddle and I don't buy the main romance chemistry at all, but that's purely my opinion. The Editor should have been plugging those gaps and keeping the writer honest. IF that had worked out I would have been a much bigger fan of this one.

Congratulations Whitney Casey! You have written the lamest book I've attempted to read in years. I managed to get through your lecture on the merits of using deodorant and washing my hair (F.Y.I. - I took health in elementary school) and tolerated your annoying habit of calling vaginas "vajayjays." However, when you suggested *I* watch and memorize 'The Godfather' and learn to cook meat, I decided you were too demented for me.

With so many Christian denominations, we seem to spend more time arguing about the specifics of what we believe rather than having a relationship with God and walking with him as Abraham and Moses and others did. This book is about focusing on the latter rather than the former. Need I say, music to my ears? Love it!

I give this a 3.5 I was excited to start reading this book because I'm going through an emotionally stressful time in my life right now and I think this book was meant for me to read. I'm not one to read self-help books or really anything that doesn't involve fiction (who likes to read about reality? BOR-RING) but I had high hopes for this book since I know Shirley Strawberry is a sassy no non-sense type of person. I think most woman would be able to relate or take some advice from atleast one story in this book. I know I sure found some enlightenment with a few. Shirley doesn't preach to you like most self-help/advice books. She relates to each situation by telling us about situations she has faced through out her life, how she dealt with them and how she SHOULD have dealt with them. She mentions how she has made plenty of mistakes in her life and she's trying to help us from making those same mistakes. She includes quite a few letters she has received from listeners asking for advice and I must say some of them are pretty crazy! She even calls one of the letters a "ghetto hot mess!". It's crazy to hear some of the hardships others are going through but it is also encouraging when I hear that others have gone through my similar situation. It's good to know I'm not that only one who's been there dont that. I didn't get any kind of amazing life-changing advice out of this book but it sure was helpful and inspiring. I would totally recommend anybody to read this, whether they are going through a hard time right now or not because sooner or later we'll all need some advice to hold on to.

Perhaps am I the only woman on the planet that thought that this book was lackluster at best? Stockett portrays a 50s style Jackson, and while true....perhaps even true to this day, it's hard to identify with the characters, it's not even like you can identify with rough and tumble Skeeter, because there's a lot of formality, and a lot of heartache. Stockett puts together a fabulous story, is a tremendous storyteller, but wasn't my favorite.
