Alice Hoffman leaves the temperate Northeast and heads south to Verity, a fictional town that "is home to more divorced women from New York than any other town in the state of Florida." As with other Hoffman books, it's difficult to pin down a protagonist, but the action revolves around a divorcee named Lucy, a K-9 cop with a nasty scar named Julian, and Lucy's 12-year-old son Keith, the "meanest boy in Verity." "Turtle Moon" is the magical, maddening month of May when the heat ratchets up and the locals "slip two aspirins into their cans of Coke, wear sunglasses, and avoid making any major decisions." Hoffman has such a skillful way of weaving the impossible along with the improbable into the description of a place that could exist on the coast of Florida, that the reader follows right along, believing it all. There's not much to the story, and it's another testament to Hoffman's characterization that you get to the end well-acquainted with Julian and Keith especially. Both might rightly be identified as the protagonist; both have been transformed and redeemed, although not necessarily as other characters (or perhaps readers) would have liked. Without giving too much away, I will say that the basic story is set in motion when Keith, on the way out the door to run away, finds a fourteen-month-old girl who becomes his companion through desperate circumstances. Lucy's efforts to protect Keith bring her into close contact with Julian and lead her to her own desperate measures.

İsmin Kaderini Nasıl Etkiliyor! - Şira Mercan Özgür TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Stacey O'Brien was a biologist working at Caltech when she was approached about caring for a barn owl that had injured its wing and would probably never be able to live in the wild. The owl, later named Wesley, was only about 4 or 5 days old. Stacy tells of her absolute devotion to Wesley and the incredible sacrifices she made for the owl. She also tells of the love and loyalty she received in return from Wesley. I have to admit that after reading this book I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would want an owl for a pet, at least not under the conditions that Stacey was faced with. She had to supply mice ( a staple in the owl diet), and keep them refrigerated, microwave them when it was time to feed Wesley, and cut them up into eatable pieces. Her arms were continually scratched due to Wesley's sharp talons. Wesley was also responsible for Stacy losing several boyfriends. There was not one piece of furniture that did not have Wesley's imprint on it. Stacy's love for animals allowed for all of the above, and was rewarded with Wesley bonding strongly to her. She was able to observe owl behavior as no one else before her has been able to do. One of the oddities that she discovered was that Wesley loved water and was a frequent visitor to a bathtub full of water. Owls, in nature, do not even drink water because they get thier liquid from the mice that they eat. This book will be of interest to lovers of nature, especially bird lovers. It will be of interest to readers who are just looking for a good read that tells the story of a young girl's love and devotion to animals, and that animal's love and devotion in return.
