This is a beautifully drawn series of vignettes about Mushi, a primitive life-form that is much closer to the line between plant and animal than other forms of life. Not everyone can see mushi, but anyone can accidentally intersect with them – usually with problematic results. Our guide on this journey is Ginko, a Mushi-shi or Mushi-Master. Ginko moves through a world tinged with mushi – he smokes constantly, because without the smoke, mushi would swarm around him, making life for other humans miserable or even dangerous. These stories were inspired by old superstitions and legends of Japan. There are mushi that steal humans to ride like pack horses, or to incubate their young. Some mushi can counterfeit a change of season, to lull humans into serving their needs. One mushi can function as a strange passenger pigeon, carrying a mushi-shi’s message to another master. Other mushi can enrich the land – or take from it. We see all of the mushi as Ginko makes his way through a world tinted by the presence of The Other. Ginko is a rare mushi master, convinced that it is not always necessary to kill mushi. His goal is to help humans live with mushi – and avoid the most dangerous of their breed. This is sort of like someone writing out the riddles in Patricia McKillip’s The Riddlemaster of Hed. If you enjoy the manga, you should rent some of the anime – they did a beautiful, award-winning interpretation of the original work. Remember that manga are black & white illustrated digest-sized Japanese comic books, so you’ll be admiring line work, not colorization.

白旗の少女 is a true story of a seven year old girl who wanders through Okinawa Japan for seven weeks during WWII. I read this book when I was about 9 or so..and it really scared me. Higa tells in full detail how she survived the hellish battle of Okinawa. What she describes is enough to make your stomach turn. Nevertheless, this book is amazing and shows the true impact of war. Quote: "Remembering Father's words to die with a brave smile, the author waves at the camera."

I wish there was the option to give 3.5 stars. I generally enjoy Elizabeth Hoyt's books and this was no exception. I was a bit disappointed in Hero's character. When I read Wicked Intentions I got that sense that she was a bit more stalwart in her individuality. In this book she was almost so bound by convention that she lost it all. However, she came through in the end.

I would give this book a 4.5. The author proposes his ideas about what elements contribute to the success of those lying outside the "norm" using data and research done by others along with interesting examples. This is definately a good read.

I was a little apprehensive about this book but I saw it at Borders on ‘the buy one get one 50% off’ table so I figured that I would take a chance on it and pick up a copy. And while I wasn’t disappointed, I didn’t find that this was particularly special in that “holy crap” sort of way. I thought that Cammy was slightly annoying and I really disliked her at parts in the novel. I mean, how she just let Gerdi fall by the wayside so that she could be more popular and accepted was sad. Gerdi was such a cool sounding friend and was strong and independent enough to march to her own drum, which I couldn’t help but completely admire. But, other than that, Cammy did some pretty nasty things along with the really nice ones that The White Rabbit (the mystery texter) told her to do. And that’s another thing – who in their right mind would just do whatever a mystery person told them to do through text messages? I know that if it was me I would tell the person to go suck an egg and be done with it. And I’d like to think that I wouldn’t abandon my best friend just because I made some new ones. However, I did enjoy reading this – mostly because I wanted to find out who The White Rabbit was and how it all ended. One thing that this book does is build up the intrigue and make you want to read on. Even though I disliked Cammy, I needed to find out what happened to her. In all, this was a nice way to spend some free time but I’m only giving it a 5/10. If possible, I would suggest getting a copy from the library or borrowing it from a friend, but that’s just me.
