To be honest, you're going to have know a bit about the scifi and fantasy genre, if only to appreciate many of the jokes. But this is one of those beginnings that suck you and then spit you out twenty books later as you realize you've spent more than just chunk change on finding out whether Rincewind really is as big of a coward as he tries to be in the beginning. The series is also known for the infamous CAPSLOCK TALKING DEATH, the bumbling and yet wonderfully heroic Nightwatch, and the cool Lord Vetinari who'd oh-so-politely skewer you if he had to. ;) but my heart belongs to the 'wizzard' known as Rincewind.

Another post-apocalyptic laff riot, this book asks what would happen if everyone in the world suddenly developed mysterious, contagious, incurable blindness? Answer: pretty much what you would think...quarantine, 'blindness' camps, and then military rule degenerating into mass chaos. (Like I said, not a beach read.) Written without any quotation marks, the book conveys both the disorienting sense of being blind, as well as the feeling of a story told by your beloved grandpa, or lover, right before you go to sleep. Sublime. Gorgeous. Saramango shows us the worst of humanity, and then makes us forgive ourselves. It's also chock full of suspense, sex and violence. Did I mention it won the Nobel prize?

I should have kept a tally of how many times the words "moist" and "panties" occurred in the same sentence, and every time, it was in reference to a teenager, or someone at least 40 years of age. Aside of the gross-ocity of that, the stereotypes of theatre professionals were absurd. For instance, when the theatre director's drunk mother ruins a party, her friend tells her "as Stanislavsky said: 'use it.'" BARF.
