Started off with a bang; however, didn't end quite as good.

Finally, a Thomas Mann under my belt and I'm quite pleased with it. One might flippantly condense the plot thusly: Uptight dullard workaholic loner novelist driven to perpetual exhaustion by a severely self-imposed Germanic inner discipline takes a belated vacation in the sunny swarthy south and discovers he's the Humbert Humbert of the boy set. Timid in the face of true passion, Gustave von Aschenbach is quite a case. Harboring a chaste classical ideal of beauty unspoiled by animal passion, he stolidly embraces an Eros without the erotic. But when he spies a 14-year-old boy of white marble purity in Venice, his understanding of Beauty undergoes profound change, and he wrestles with the implications. Eventually it becomes a fatal obsession, his usual caution thrown to the wind, literally, to the disease-bearing sirocco. There are moments of surpassing loveliness in this often philosophical and poetic short novella. Mann's descriptions of Tadzio, the boy, are undeniably swoon inducing and the sensory descriptions of Venice are tangible and evocative. There's been much ado about various translations of this book; the most common being the one by H.T. Lowe-Porter, which I read. I didn't find anything particularly wrong with it, as a read. As for the translation itself, how can I know? I'm not bilingual. The first few pages are a tad difficult, but that is mainly due to Mann's meticulous and possibly imprecise attempts to explore various approaches to the artistic ideal and his highly detailed and repetitive explanations of Aschenbach's self-disciplinary nature. After that, when our man is on the boat to Venice, the book is mostly smooth going. I need to go back and watch the Luchino Visconti film with Dirk Bogarde, which is great, but unseen by me for many years.

One of the best books I've read. Just awesome. Conservatives will love the first 2/3s - how much better things are than they used to be - and groan the final 1/3 - when Easterbrook proposes a push to eliminate poverty and make health care insurance universal - but the whole thing is important and worth thinking about.

As soon as I had learnt to read, I read these every night. Loved them to so many pieces. Still do. Rebecca

I actually REALLY really liked this book. Such flawed characters! Don't be scared away by the length.

Wow. What a fantastic read. So glad that I did love this book. The way it is written, how the suspension in the book gets higher and higher for us readers. love it. Highly recommend and not only for true crime readers. It reads like fiction.Could not put it down.

I flew through this book in two days. I felt like at the end, the narrator summed up some things about her life/herself/etc that hadn't been fully explored in the story, but in general, she's an interesting girl carrying us along on her life in suburbia.

I really loved this book. For me it was like a combination of The Lottery and 1984, with a bit of The Most Dangerous Game tossed in. However, it did not come off as a "ripoff". I think the author does a good job of getting her political philosophy across without it being over the top and taking away from the characters or getting complicated. I feel like this book should be in the hands of every High School student at some point. visit my blog for a more in depth review. http://sweetteaandbookreviews.blogspo...

This book takes an already fascinating tale and musical and leads it in a surprisingly captivating direction as we delve into the life of Erik, the man who would later become the Phantom. I cannot say enough about this book. I have lent it out to just about everyone I know and bought a copy of it second-hand for my best friend so I could show here one of my all-time favourite books. It's simply remarkable. Utterly so.
