It took me a couple of times to read this book to really get into it, but once I really sat down and focused on the characters and how the author had set up the book I really enjoyed this novel. Like many other Jodi Picoult books she switches from perspective of characters and the past and the present which can be a little hard to keep straight. Also like Picoult’s books it deals with human tragedy and is depressing with a very somber tone throughout the whole book. However it is a very unique piece of literature and one I very much enjoyed.

Funny thing, I had to read it as a freshman. Moved to another town as a sophomore, and chose to do a book report on it. I got rave reviews for understanding it so well! He he he. Well, it was easy reading it for the second time and using the last years worksheets on it. I'd like to read it again someday!

I started reading this book when it first came out. I bought it because it was part of Oprah's book club (and I usually like what she recommends), and also because it was so popular. I thought it was pretty good and was enjoying reading it. My reading got interrupted by my college graduation and end of year projects and exams. Almost 3 years later, I picked it up again, to fulfill a category in a book challenge (book you started and never finished). I was worried I would have to start the book over from the beginning because it had been so long since I started it, but that wasn't necessary. I finished the book 2 days later and really enjoyed it. I read it from a different perspective now, because since I started it, all of the controversy regarding the book has emerged. Regardless of it was fiction or non-fiction, I still thought it was well written (different from most other styles of writing, but it was very interesting to read) and was still an amazing story of a man overcoming his demons.

This book sickened me and provoked me to unleash a tirade about the horrors of covert racism to my poor, unsuspecting boyfriend. It was a tough, uncompromising read - but one I definitely don't regret. Not one to read if you're looking for something uplifting. Worth it for those prepared to confront the darker side of human nature, and their own dark side. I recommend reading the other reviewer's comments - not everybody liked what they read, but they were unanimously floored by it nonetheless. A powerful read.

Selected short stories Though Faulkner writes about Mississipi and Yoknapatawpha, his own imaginary territory of 2400 Miles sq. with 15611 inhabitants, centered by Jefferson city, but I always see every single part of the world in his novels, where the characters are suffering of the situation which is imposed by visible and invisible powers, but they keep going on with life as they have no other possibilities ...

I personally like this book because of my own interest in African-american history and i especially love to read and study about Ruby Bridges. This is a good book about her life and the historical significance of what she accomplished by integrating an all white school in New Orleans. However because of the amount of text and actual historic black and white pictures (non-illustrated) I would only recommend this for older students (i.e. 3rd-5th)

The first novel in a softcore werewolf porn murder mystery series...I should have a shelf just named "guilty pleasures" and get it over with. How Catholic of me.

It seems like most people rate this as the novel and not the Lit Crit book? Regardless, there are several essays that I enjoyed in here, but many read more like a NYTimes book review and others presented arguments that seemed weak or not engaging. If you have a passing knowledge of Vonnegut's early life story, probably 30% of the essays can be skipped. If not, then they are probably quite useful.
