One horrific event after another. We never got to know these characters at all, they were all two dimensional. All the black men were monsters, all the white men weak and nasty, the white women selfish and the refugees pure innocence. These are not real people I cared about, just caricatures. I read the whole book sortof wincing to see what would come next. This should have been an article in the New Yorker. I get it, he did a lot of research and cares about this problem. I do too! But this book wasn't a novel. He seems to have considerable writing talent (with the very notable exception of how children speak.) It reads fast but sortof like eating an oyster - just open up and let it slide down. Well meaning but not a novel that worked for me.

Life IS Ridiculous One woman’s observations about the things that the rest of have probably noticed as well. By Lesa Colleran March 7, 2007 Where real life meets with the silly, amusing observations about the random things most of us take for granted or quietly grumble about under our collective breaths; these are the things that Valerie Fausone notices AND writes about. It all begins innocently enough; advising the reader to “Just Be Cool”. Solid enough advice, but she makes it look so easy! Step by step she draws you into what ultimately becomes a true “laugh out loud” (alternatively known as don’t read this book while drinking a beverage) collection of tales. As a somewhat regular woman who enjoys reading, I first viewed it as “just another book” that was “probably” worth reading. I hereby declare my mistake with humility as this is without a doubt the funniest book I have read since the last publishing by anything “Erma Bombeck” or “Dave Barry”. I am humbled by the unique humor and satire that can really not be compared to any other author on the planet, perhaps in the galaxy. My favorite excerpt from the book is this one: “Kids cannot be convinced that strawberry syrup is not a fruit and are able to make a pretty good argument that a Snickers bar works as a breakfast choice on account of the peanuts. If there are no candy bars available, possible suggestions will be Cookie Donut cereal, or beef jerky with grape Jello on the side. This makes perfect sense in the mind of a small growing person. Attempts to guide them in the direction of granola will fail. Kids have their own idea about what is good. When they finally get to college, they’ll drink beer for breakfast, so why get bent out of shape over their food choices now?” I spend most of my time laughing, but underneath the laughter was something deeper; the feeling that I wasn’t alone in all of this muck. It gave me fodder to launch at all the ridiculous but sometimes irritating or painful things in my life. That’s a wonderful thing to get from simply reading a book, at least I think so. But it’s not all about kids, parenting or things that appeal to me. I honestly think that there is something in there for everyone. I don’t gush often and I most certainly will not enthusiastically advocate something if I don’t believe in it. I honestly believe that this book is one of the funniest things I have ever had the privilege of reading. In fact I think I will go read it again… Buy the book, laugh your collective butts off. You won’t be sorry you did and you don’t even have to thank me for pointing it out to you. Not really my cup of tea. Some of it is interesting, but the nephews being sexually attracted to their aunts (and in some cases having children with them), and a man wanting to marry a little girl before she even went through puberty, and other such things turned me off.

I quite liked it. It was an interesting, quick read. The characters were easy to relate to, the plot was tight and clean and it was just fun. In the way of many YA books, it focused more on plot and character interaction than on romance and passion, but I was interested in how the subplot managed to bring elements of the effects that more peripheral adult world can have on youth.

This was the most engaging novel I've read in years. It was laugh-out-loud funny, it moved me to tears, and it moved me to write a little review on this website, something few books can claim. The New York Times Book Review said, "The pages of The Brothers K sparkle," and I think that's a wonderful description. If you have even the tiniest appreciation of baseball as a metaphor for life you will enjoy this book.

A funny read for a little while. You really can not sit down and read it like a normal book or anything, so getting it from the library is kind of annoying. The humor kind of gets lost in the pages and your left with a nihilistic view on American politics (with no solutions :p) But I liked the general approach and ideas in the book.
