I randomly checked this out as a kid and it was the scariest book I have ever read (not in a good fun way either) I still get chills when I think of some of the stories. "Whatever you do, do not read "the Patchwork Monkey"

I love my Jacques Pepin cookbooks - and I think this book summarize him beautifully. It illustrates clearly his love of food and traditional French cooking, but also his willingness to explore beyond classical cuisine. I had no idea he had be chef to Charles de Gaulle - and learning how he got his start in America was fascinating. His lack of pretension that makes him successful on TV clearly comes through, as does his personality.

I laugh aloud every time I read this book. I never grow tired of Sedaris' wit and honesty when recounting his life. One of the few books I've read in my lifetime that never gets old. I also enjoy the looks I receive from people while reading in a public place and suddenly burst with laughter. I've laughed harder at Sedaris and his fortunes/misfortunes than most of the shlock Hollywood is trying to pass off as "must-see-comedy-movie of the year." Kudos Mr. Sedaris! You are the Zeus of my literary realm!

My mother first read the Eloise books to me as a little girl - After that first time, I don't think I let her read me anything else. I still read them, even at 23! Eloise is pretty bratty, sure, but she inspired in me independence, a passion for imagination and the belief that girls can do anything. They spoke to both my tomboy nature and my girly side, and made me realize I didn't have to be one way or the other. I could like fishing, getting dirty and dressing up for parties all at the same time.
