This is a book every woman should read! Single, in a relationship, married. It gives us props for being the awesome women we are, and makes us feel good about having standards. (Standards are more than okay, kids. They're NECESSARY.) They need to write another book together and FAST.

i really wish there was like a 0.5 system. anywho.. i'd give this little cutie a 3.5 Alex Flinn is great at what she does. She has written this book and Beastly in a male POV and it works and it was a nice change from reading female dominated narration which rocks by the way, but variety is the spice of life! Flinn takes you on a journey from here ... to there .. AND BACK! wooo ! i love modern fairytale retellings and there were a lot of suprises in this book to character wise. Overall nice job ! i like the cover, and title too!!! :P and johnny is real sweet which is a plus & he got his happy ending! get this book! it'll be one unique ride ! :) happy readings !

Having been given this book as a Christmas present from my best friend, and as one of his favourite trilogies, I was intrigued as to what I would think. Having never read anything from these authors before, I had no real idea what to expect with regards to their styles, or characterisations, etc, so was ready to expect the unexpected. After the few first chapters in, I was unsure what to make of this book. It is very politically involved within the world that it is set, and contains lots of strong characters which, at first, I struggled to get to grips with. At this point, I was starting to feel a little concerned that I would end up not enjoying this book, and it would be one of 'those issues' forever-more between my friend and I, but I continued on with it.. and I'm so glad I did. Once I finally got to grip with the characters, and got involved with them, and the environment in which they are placed, I got very attached to the main character in the story. The young lady suffers many trials, and setbacks whilst trying to retain her families honour and dignity, and you really see her grow throughout the book. This really is one fantasy novel like nothing I've read in the genre before, and I must say I did enjoy it, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the trilogy plays out. Overall: Lovely environments, excellent drama, great characterisation, and a plot full of intrigue, loyalty, love, honour, and murder. I'm really pleased I've had the pleasure of reading it, and if you fancy reading something a little different than the norm from this genre, I would recommend it.

Excellent book. Interesting and insightful, especially for someone who did not read all the daily news releases of this tragedy. Was stunned at some of the information and facts contained in the book.

I really loved this one because you get to meet Lily's family. And there is more of Jack. :)

This novel takes a historical event I am already very interested in—the doomed Franklin Expedition to find the Northwest Passage—and turns it into a horror story. A lot of what Simmons does is interesting: the character arcs of two of the main players, Captain Francis Crozier and Dr. Goodsir, are very well done, and there are some excellent set pieces—in particular a staging of Edgar Allen Poe's "Masque of the Red Death" amid the snow drifts and the polar ice. However, this was one of those books that I finished and immediately went, "Man! There is absolutely NO REASON for this thing to have been 800 pages long!" Seriously. None. I got that the conditions were cold and nasty the first thousand times, and the atmosphere, while good, was nowhere near excellent enough to merit sustaining an 800-page narrative. At one point while reading and encountering an especially long action sequence, I joked to a friend, "Clearly, this is a MAN book." By which I meant: size, apparently, does matter, and very much. So while there were aspects of this book I enjoyed, it never really moved, or even gripped, me. It was mostly just long, and kind of unpleasant.

I borrowed this one from Rose and then turned around and bought one for my Mom is was so good. Similar to Poisonwood Bible in that it is set in colonial east Africa but it is the true account of a whiter, farmer's daughter growing up there. Captures the harsh beauty and loneliness of living in the middle of nowhere as a stranger in a strange land.

it is almost painful at times because the character is so real.

Blech. This book was preachy pablum. I don't agree with the philosophy presented (it seems hideously selfish and naive at the same time), thinly cloaked in a weak story. Years ago someone told me I wouldn't like this book, and they were right.

I'm not so much for long narratives, and this book is one of them. The story is about the aftermath of meteor showers as a lot have thought them to be. Almost all people went blind except for a few. Recovery was initiated by small groups, but the triffids, plants who seem to have a mind of their own slowed the process. The story mentioned 6 years since the tragic circumstances started. Even after this time, triffids were still abounding, and man was still fighting to eradicate them. That's where it ended, with a few words to give some glimpse of hope into the future. For all it's long narratives, I was still left wanting at the end. The chaos was still there, albeit an organized chaos. Nothing has changed except that there were now more people (babies conceived and born after the tragedy). The struggle to fight off the triffids was still there. I believe the lesson that the author wanted his readers to take is that man will fight to survive, and to go on living, he'll make do with what's available for him. The lesson can be gleamed from the story alright, it just wasn't much of a reading pleasure for me.
