While I’ve never been to Japan, checked out the JET program, or lived outside the country I was born in, I identified with some of the themes presented in “Tonoharu.” It is a fairly bleak look at the aimless feeling of some aspects of post college life in the era of the “quarter life crisis” and the self-loathing loneliness and lack of ambition of the main character, Daniel Wells, is something I’ve seen in myself as well as my peers at various low points of our lives between college and career. While Daniel certainly does not appear to be adapting well to the challenges and opportunities of his life in a rural Japanese village, I’m not sure he’d be any better in his American hometown and his life seems to be at a low ebb during the course of the story. It is not a happy tale, though the art is beautiful and the Japanese landscape invites further introspection and makes me want to visit. The various festivals and other cultural events mentioned in passing provide a great background for the low key story of personal failure and I particularly liked the author self insert character framing his predecessors sad departure. This is the first segment of a prospected trilogy and I am greatly curious how it ends; if Daniel’s life does not improve or reach some sort of point of personal crisis and transformation, the tale just might be too plodding and depressing to warrant recommendation, despite great promise.

An insightful look at one of the most sinister chapters in American history. Excellent reportage with all the twists and turns of page-turning thriller. I'm impressed with the breadth and depth of Hampton Sides' work and the strength of his storytelling. The book never drags and no words are wasted. I'd highly recommend it.

This is one of my favorite Bentley Little books. I love the way he takes ordinary instances and turns them dark and sinister and sadistic. The Store is a new large department store that has come to town. The main character has been against its opening for all the same reasons: losing small town business, not contributing to local growth, etc etc etc. once the store opens he can only wish those were the problems the store creates. The Store is somehow able to have stocked and give to you your hearts desires, especially the bad ones. His daughter starts to work there to his objections and where Little goes with how much the daughter does for the store is mind blowing. From the early signs of evil through the night managers and the corporate level this story kept me riveted and wanting more. I love when The Store shows up in other Little books even though generally its in passing so far and not part of other stories but I could easily see how he could work that out. Definite must read!!!

Jack isn't too enthusiastic about marrying an overly tall, red-head, but he soon finds that Grace has more attractive qualities. Of course, this couple has a Big Misunderstanding to overcome.
