I think this book is an acceptable thriller with bonus points for the latter part taking place in areas I grew up. It is not my favorite of the Kodiak books or of Rucka's work in general, but it gets the job done if you're in the mood for this sort of thriller novel. I liked the ending. It felt satisfying and kept with this series' verisimilitude. No major social quibbles. a few of the lines make you roll your eyes hard core.

يضع شريعتى حد فاصل بين نوعين من أنواع الدين - إن جاز التعبير- نشأ بينهم صراع على مر التاريخ، فلم يكن الصراع أبدا بين الدين و الكفر، ولكن كان صراع "دين ضد دين"، دين التوحيد الذى جاء به الأنبياء ليُخرجوا العباد من عبادة العباد إلى إخلاص العبودية و الخضوع لله وحدة. دين الأنبياء كان دائما دين "الثورة" ضد الوضع القائم، و ضد تقديس "الطاغوت"الذى برر سلطانه بشعارات دينية فكان الشرك باطن هذا الدين و التوحيد ظاهره. و هنا يستخدم الكاتب عبارة "الدين أفيون الشعوب" و لكن بصورة أخرى غير التى أعتاد الفلاسفة و المفكرين اللادينين إستخدمها لمهاجمة الدين عبر بها شريعتى عن الطواغيت الذين يبررون سلطانهم بتغييب الناس بشعرات دينية تقدس الوضع القائم على أنه إرادة الله و القدر . الكتاب رائع هو عبارة عن محاضرتين من تلك النوع الثورى التى أعتاد شريعتى إلقاءها فى حسينية إرشاد

This book is really long...but after reading over half (and yes, I fully intend to finish it someday) I highly recommend it! It's the kind of book you can put down for a while and come back to. Diamond has done an amazing job of research and perhaps conjecture as well. You will wonder when our society will Collapse or if we could learn from other's mistakes and avoid an ugly repitition of history.

I read this quite quickly and enjoyed it. The story was a good one and it was great that Tess brought in elements of chinese into her novel. It's interesting to see how her characters are continuing to develop although I feel that Jane Rizzola is starting to not be as interesting; whilst Maura Isles continues to be the outside character who can't find her place. Although the author brings in Rat from the previous book there doesn't seem to be much development of his & Maura's relationship; and there is a brief mention of Daniel Brophy. It will be interesting to see how things develop in the next book.

I quite enjoyed The Yiddish Policemen's Union. The core is a who dunnit mystery, but the greater theme is an exploration of redemption. Based on an actual proposal to carve out a section of Alaska for Jews displaced by WWII and the Holocaust, Chabon paints a vivid picture of a place so odd and unique you can almost believe that it did exist. Didn't love the end, but I am notoriously hard on book endings.
