Very well-written, easy-to-read, and fascinating. My only "complaint" is that photos in a book with so many descriptions of objecys would have been welcome.

Every person with curly hair should read this book, if not cover to cover, at least hitting the hair washing highlights. I think I first read of this book in Bitch magazine, in the column they do about things they love. I've been meaning to check it out, then a library patron requested it through interlibrary loan, prompting me to request it through interlibrary loan too. Today I followed the hairwashing instructions for the first time, and my hair looks GREAT! I haven't had this many beautiful curls since high school! (The main trick I've learned is only to use a little shampoo and only use it on the scalp, not all through the hair.) Wow! I am now a beliver, and I want to convert all the curly heads I know to the Curly Girl way. I feel like I just discovered some new religion. Really, I am serious, if you have curly hair, READ THIS BOOK!

In the early decades of the 20th Jean de la Hire wrote a series of popular French pulps about the Nyctalope. The Nyctalope was a kind of superhero, with the ability to see in the dark. In 1933 de la Hire provided us with an origin story for him in the form of Enter the Nyctalope. It is 1912, and Leo Saint-Clair’s father Pierre us a brilliant engineer who has devised a brilliant invention called Radiant-Z that can control all the world’s radio waves. Unfortunately the invention has attracted the attention of anarchist and nihilist gangs from eastern Europe who will stop at nothing to steal this invention. They break into Saint-Cair’s laboratory, shoot the inventor and steak the plans for the device. The 20-year-old Leo is not going to take this lying down however. With the assistance of his brave and resourceful chums from his local rugby club (and some aid from the French authorities) he sets out to smash the nihilist ring responsible for this outrage. He goes undercover as a bomb-throwing nihilist, but in the course of his crusade he sustains the serious injuries that will eventually transform him into the Nyctalope. He will become a superhero with a powerful artificial heart giving him abnormal endureance, and the ability to see as well in pitch darkness in broad daylight. This book provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of the French pulp fiction and the even more obscure world of French literary superheroes. If you like your fiction overheated, breathless and pulpy with an emphasis on silly fun you can’t go wrong with this one.

It's hard enough to keep track or stay on top of the plethora of alternate timelines in Marvel or DC comics. The Ultimate X-Men is another alternate timeline series. It's hard for me not to think what's the real origin of each characters as I read along. However, the Ultimate X-Men is somewhat easier to follow. This particular series seems to be popular with gay comic freaks because there are some gay characters, such as Colossus. I mean, who would've thought of that!
