I reread this book recently. As with all Michner books, it is a sweeping historical novel. This one centers on a tel in Israel. The story is framed by an archealogical dig at tel Makor with each of the layers of the tel revealing a bit of the story of Makor. It encompasses pre-history through the 1960s. It is really fascinating and comprises most of my knowledge of the history of the Middle East - I know I shouldn't let a novel do that, but hey, better that than a movie! At times it is hard to wade through simply because of the sheer volume of it, but Michner is a superb storyteller and that paired with the fascinating subject matter makes it well worth the effort.

This book contains a lot of useful information for people who are interested in improving their photography. His humor can get a bit dorky at times, but the tips he provides are great and very easy to understand.

With chapters extending to two pages at the most and at barely two hundred pages, Let The Northern... pretty much dispenses with descriptive passages. This is especially unusual considering that its setting is Lapland, a locale that, presumably, few of its readers have visited. This is because we are firmly in the protagonist's mind. This is the real location. And our hero is so troubled and unaware of her surroundings that she barely avoids freezing to death. In her search for her biological father, Clarissa morphs into a mumbling derelict. She may be in Lapland but she would no doubt be a foreigner in her hometown as well. The familiar topic (20 something heroine searches for her biological father) may make you feel you know what's in store. But this is not a book about finding yourself. Life lessons are few and misguided. On the contrary, and keeping with the title, it's actually about losing yourself. Reminiscent of Marilynne Robinson's "Housekeeping," this is a haunting tale about a damaged woman who, through hereditary and past trauma, can no longer be herself. Clarissa's journey of self discovery ultimately locks every door behind her, leaving nowhere left to go but forward.

I'm a big fan of recreating art with a slight spin to it. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a perfect example of using a classic story and upgrading it with what's hot today. Zombies, an element that has been making itself at home in modern day films for the last decade, were the perfect touch, without actually destroying Jane Austen's masterpiece. Same story, but with zombies. Traditionally for teens and a clever way to introduce them to classics.

What's not to like about an expose on the life of a Geisha? But I felt sorry for the real Geisha when she came out against Golden. Apparently he promised her anonymity. So I have mixed feelings about the story now.
A funny, surprisingly endearing book that struggles with the most basic of human traits and necessities -- love, freedom, boredom, the freedom to fuck up a lot because you're bored. The fantastical setting paints a rich world for this small portrait of epic attempts to create a life worth living, and by the time you put it down, you'll be thinking in the slang and wishing that, despite all of its flaws, this was a world you could see for yourself. But hey -- maybe one day.

this is one of my favorite books of all time. I've read it several times. It's a great portrait of Montana and makes me feel close to my people. It's a great family narrative in its own right as well.

I have to say I really enjoyed this book. Kaje did an excellent job of telling a fun story to read. As opposed to many books in the genre, there actually IS a plot! The erotic scenes are kept to a minimum, but are extremely hot when they do happen, which makes them seem all the better. The story is interesting. A little predictable, but still keeps your interest. I do have a couple pet peeves, however. I like all my major characters to be multidimensional. It seems that often authors in this type of story have grudge against organized religion. This seems to come out in Brenda and Ben's grandparents. I know there are people out there like that, but it just seemed a little much at times. I know the author was trying to make a 'case', but it just seemed a little over-the-top. I also had a hard time believing the overt homophobia in the police department. I'm a manager in major corporation. Companies these days are absolutely paranoid about creating or even allowing a hostile work environment. ANY kind of even suggested homophobia would be treated as an ethics violation and sexual harassment, at the minimum, and the employee would be severely...and I do mean severely...disciplined if not terminated. I'm sure this attitude exists out there, but I find it hard to believe that in a government/union environment like a police department in a major city, that this would have been tolerated. Just doesn't seem realistic. In reality Mac would have gone to HR and filed an ethics complaint and then trotted himself to the union and filed a grievance, both against the the violator and against his supervisor. If anyone who reads this review has ever felt discriminated against or sexually harassed...PLEASE talk to your manager and then your HR rep and if that doesn't help, make sure you DOCUMENT and seek legal council. All-in-all, its a good read, better than average, therefore in my estimation, a 4-star.
