Memories of Istanbul written by the Turkish man who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006... Fascinating at the beginning, with beautiful descriptions, the book became repetitious and slow after the first third...could not finish it. is it the fault of the translator? of my fast paced life?

This book is a fictional, coming-of-age tale that revolves around the real 1906 death of Grace Brown that took place in rural New York state. (See An American Tragedy and its 1951 film adaptation A Place in the Sun starring Elizabeth Taylor). Sixteen-year-old Mattie Gokey and her family are left nearly destitute by her mother's death and her father's inability to care for the younger children and run the family farm by himself. Mattie is at a personal crossroads when, at a hotel where she works, a young woman named Grace Brown gives her a bundle of letters with instructions to burn them. Grace's body is soon dredged from the nearby lake. This book is more about Mattie and how she finds her voice as a young woman at the turn-of-the-twentieth-century, rather than finding out who, or what, caused the death of Grace Brown. Mattie deals with racism, sexism, poverty and the choice between staying in her rural community and becoming a wife or going to college to study literature. Mattie's friend Minnie (who is also in her teens) serves as the example of teen aged marriage and motherhood to Mattie. Her experiences with Minnie serve to lift the veil of romanticism that often covers marriage and motherhood, and shows Mattie the harsh reality of having to deal with them both, while still a teenager. (Mattie feels that her beloved books have betrayed her on this subject and calls the authors "liars".) Mattie deals with many situations that today's teens will most likely not encounter; situations that would cause a 16 yr. old to mature significantly, however it is refreshing and realistic to read that Mattie still shows immaturity and inexperience in many ways. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and I do recommend it. However, this book says it's for young adults, "8th grade and up", but I'm not so sure that I would recommend someone that young read it on their own. If someone that young did wish to read it, I would suggest that an adult read this book beforehand, and help to explain the motivations of the characters and the situations they find themselves in.

How she ends up normal is beyond me. Almost can't believe this is real and too sad to think that it was.

Not sure what I think at this moment. Book was an easy read but not as shocking as the media hyped it up to be. I came from a strict "Western" family and apparently hold my own children to a higher standard as well. Do I make them practice swimming or dance 4 hours a day - no! Do I want them to enjoy their extracurricular activity - yes! No, I am not going to push them at a skill but I will push them to do well in school and mind their manners without endless television, computer, etc. So not sure if that makes me a good or bad parent at this point in time. The book definitely made me more aware of my interactions with my children and recognize the faults in myself that I did not like in my father while I was growing up. Definitely not the greatest book but glad I took the few days to read it.

Just to make sure I touch the bases with this and do this incredible novel justice, I just want to make sure that you know I did have a Q&A with this author on my blog last week. Feel free to hit the archives from last week and enjoy the read, he gave some really good answers to my questions; basically he did the best he could with what I threw at him. He hit all the questions out of the park for home runs; I wanted to post that before my take on his work. I was hoping to gain more insight into his thought process and writing style before I hammered this out. Great stuff so enjoy it. “The Paradise Prophecy” is a really good read. It did screw with my head quite a bit as I am a Catholic and I think most of us, whether we are believers in God or the afterlife, heaven and hell, angels and demons are handed a bundle to consider as this novel blazes a trail through the mind and soul. It is hard not to question things and to look at them in a different way as one reads through this. Browne puts forth a believable hypothesis and seemingly backs it up with many things to bring his narrative home, to make his points, to make this an engaging, explosive read that has stayed with me since I finished it. The read is entertaining, insightful, action packed, fast paced, and thought provoking. I am glad that he will be following this up with the same characters because I really came to enjoy them as they are excellent foils and I can see myself becoming very attached to them. I have been fortunate of late to have found a bounty of awesome reads, and this one is surely a keeper. Grab it, expect to spend some time with it, and expect it to expand your mind and your beliefs a bit. Here is the synopsis: “A spectacular thriller inspired by John Milton's Paradise Lost in which the final chapter of the War in Heaven is about to play out on Earth, with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance. The Myth When God cast the archangel Satan into Hell, ending the War in Heaven, peace prevailed on Earth. Until the fallen angels took revenge in the Garden of Eden. Ever since, mankind has been in a struggle between good and evil, paradise and apocalypse: the fall of Rome, The Crusades, World Wars, nuclear proliferation, the Middle East Crisis... The War in Heaven never really ended-it just changed venues. For millennia, God's angels have been fighting Satan's demons on Earth, all in hopes of bringing about Satan's greatest ambition, the Apocalypse. The Reality Satan has never been closer to his goal than right now. Agent Bernadette Callahan is a talented investigator at a shadowy government organization known only as Section, on the trail of a serial killer with nearly supernatural abilities. Sebastian "Batty" LaLaurie is a religious historian who knows far too much about the other side- and that hard-earned knowledge is exactly what Callahan needs. This unlikely duo pair up for a race across the globe, decoding clues left in ancient texts from the Bible to Paradise Lost and beyond. In the process they stumble upon a vast conspiracy-one beyond the scope of mankind's darkest imagination.”

Too apologetic, and not in a funny way. I am afraid that if I tried to write a book I would write in this way.

Bu aynı anda parlak ve üzücü oldu. Bu kelimelerin kendileri kadar yankılanmasını beklemiyordum. Onları hemen hayatıma uygulayabilmeyi beklemiyordum. Tarihsel bir perspektif arıyordum, doğru yönde gittiğimizi gösteren bazı işaretler. Biz. Güzellik her şey değildir. Aşk her şey değildir. İlişkiler her şey değildir. Kültürümüzü geliştirmek için kendimizi geliştirmeliyiz.
