I thought this book was going to be about a boy and a tiger, kind of like an episode of Man vs. Wild. It wasn't. Instead, it was all "deep" and focused on spirituality and religion. I was bored and annoyed. And the cover is MISLEADING.

This book was absolutely incredible! A profound journey in reading! What a way to look at life and God. I am rereading this book, just so I can experience things I missed the first time around. I even sent one of my sisters a copy and am recommending this book to everyone I know. Whether you are spiritual or not, this book looks at things from perspectives that are unique and astounding. WOW! The beginning is very hard to get through but sets up the whole book for the wonders it contains. Hang in there!

There are some good recipes in here, and it's really, really funny. I've made the silver dollar pancakes, with and without the mashed banana, and my husband agrees they are the best pancakes we've made at home. Okay, so pancakes are not the most difficult thing to make, but I'm anxious to try some of the other recipes as soon as I have a little time. The pictures are great, you have to see them for yourself.

If I ever have kids I want to do something for them that is this cool. Starting when his oldest son was three, Tolkein wrote long, elaborate, illustrated letters to his children from Santa Claus, including notes from the North Polar Bear and from Father Christmas's secretary (who of course speaks Elvish). There's a new edition that reprints a lot of the letters in color, and it's fantastic.

This was way less epic than I remember it being--I was surprised by how little time it spanned, but Mary Call was still wondrously tough so I still mostly loved it (Katniss of The Hunger Games so reminds me of her, and K. could totally have used her wildcrafting skills). I liked how the end wasn't about Mary Call giving up her own toughness or being saved by someone else (like Grandfather Boxcar Children), but realizing how much she'd underestimated the people around her. p.s. In my memory I always saw Mary Call as young Jodie Foster and was convinced the actress who played her in the movie looked like Jodie, so I was totally surprised when I looked at the movie cover on imdb and saw the actress looked nothing like her.

ustinov as usual brilliantly & ruthlessly gets at the american society and its law & order. It is described as "the novel that does to law & order what Catch-22 did to war"(harpers) The satire is excellently executed through the character krumangel

I chose this book because it was about a family and their journey to have a child with Down syndrome AND because they were treated right here in Hartford, so I actually know and have worked with nearly every doctor in the book. Basically, the book is about their decision to abort or not to abort, and it boils down to "if only we knew just HOW retarded she would be... if she'll be on the low IQ range, we'll keep her; if she'll be severely retarded, we'll abort". This is NOT what I was expecting from the book (you know from the beginning they keep her, so I figured it would be more like they realized the innate value of a child, regardless of her abilities). Still, the redeeming value of the book was that it taught me the inner workings of the minds of people who think very differently than I do, and that in this day and age (she was born in '99 perhaps), well educated people still have no concept of what Down syndrome is like.

Check out more reviews at Books to the Sky. An incredibly interesting read, is how I would describe this book. I felt like I had just settled into the story when BAM! she dies! SHE DIES! I think I actually gasped out loud at that part. But that's when the story gets good. Honest. There's tons of gods and goddesses and stuff going on that's so intriguing it's hard to put down. The only thing that detracted from the story was the lack of editing. I found a grammatical error on almost every page that I read. While it wasn't enough to lose my enjoyment in the book, it was enough that I noticed it. That being said, Betrayal is the first in a series. A series I plan on reading and finishing.
It pains me to give any Lynn Flewelling book one star, but there it is--this book is a bore. It normally takes me max 2 days to finish a book of hers, esp the Nightrunner series. This time it took me nearly three weeks. The characters talk, then they travel mostly uneventfully to another place. Shampoo, rinse, repeat for most of the book. There is no excitement here at all. I don't know if she' writing any more installments of the series, but you might want to skip this one and read the next one.
