Back when I was a teenager, exploring the things teenagers explore, this was one of the first books on the topic I somehow found. I don't remember how it came to my attention, but I'm still glad it did. Look, it is what it is. It's an erotic novel from the 90s and in some ways it's very much a product of both. It's not going to win any literary awards. However, it is actually quite well written, well paced, and nicely plotted. There is a enough of a story to keep it from being merely a series of sexy sketches. I don't love the characters, but I like them. I think Genevieve makes sense and has a realistic evolution. The sexy situations are varied, using fantasy and performances by other couples to bring variety. There is M/f, F/m, F/f, and M/m in varying forms. The protagonist is almost definitely bisexual (despite some reasoning to the contrary) and gay people throughout the book are depicted in a positive light. The differences between fun BDSM play and harmful abuse are clearly explained without being preachy lessons in the lifestyle. I know I'm devoting a lot of space to this, but it was one of the first books like it I ever read, and it does hold up. It's sexy, it's imaginative, and it's strangely romantic. If you are looking for a steamy read that isn't insipid, abusive, or generally poorly written, I can recommend this novel.

The Poetic Edda goes hand-in-hand with the Prose Edda. Unlike the Prose Edda, the transcriber(s) of the collected poems and sayings are unknown. My Odin quote comes from this book, from a collection of sayings of the Norse God entitled 'Sayings of the High One'. Unless you really like things Norse, you will probably find this book hard going. On the other hand, the poetry is not 'poetry for the sake of it', there are many pearls of wisdom, so if you are looking for tips on how to live a better life, delivered in a Viking, no nonesense, hard hitting, if you don't like it that's tough, style, you may just enjoy it. I have.

It seems I've practically underlined this whole book but here are some of my favorites: "We see achievement as purposeful and monolithic, like the sculpting of a massive tree trunk that has first to be brough from the forest and then shaped by long labor to assert the artist's vision, rather than something crafted from odds and ends, like a patchwork quilt, and lovingly used to warm different nights and bodies." "We must invest time and passion in specific goals and yet at the same time acknowledge that these are mutable." "Trying to get a [college] faculty to change a curriculum is like trying to move a graveyard." "Being a mommy is part of being a good president." "We must transform our attitude toward all productive work and toward the planet into expressions of homemaking, where create and sustain the possibility of life." Ok, I better stop there, otherwise I'll have the whole book in here. I found connections to my life NOW as well as ideas and a way of thinking about the FUTURE. READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Arlene for recommending it!

Nice fluff read with some really funny insights on life in a soulless office, at a corporation that literally does nothing. My favorite (and too close to home) jab at management comes when IT gets their entire budget cut, and suddenly a system causes all the exit doors in the building to lock. IT tries to say, "This project [the automatically locking doors] was put on the back burner because of lack of funding" while management screams, "What do mean? There are no higher priorities to this company than not having all of our doors lock at the same time!" Anyone who has ever worked on a software project will want to laugh and cry at the same time.

I was preparing for a 6-month stay in Chile and decided to brush up on some of its literature. Besides Pablo Neruda, i think the most famous writer out of Chile is Isabel Allende, and this, being her most famous book, seemed like a good starting point. Allende does a superb job of mixing the fantastic with reality... blue "mermaid" people and a dog that lives forever are just a few of the funny aspects that makes it such a unique and "magical" book. Seeing the way chile developed through her eyes is very different than what you read in the history books. I'd love to read it again, as i feel like i read through it so quickly that i probably missed a few things; seeing as its remarkably well written and completely spell-binding, i dont think it would be too hard to do so :) Probably one of the most heart-breaking and compelling aspects of the book was the portrayal of the Allende government and his (and the country's) subsequent destruction due to the Pinochet regime... it makes the characters, some based on real people, seem much more alive, a fact that causes the reader to suddenly become a part of the history rather than a modern-day observer. Its a grand work in every aspect.
