I would give this 3 1/2 stars if I knew how to add the extra half. I absolutely LOVED the first half of this book and was completely let down by the second half. There are a lot of similarities between this book and the 'Twilight' saga - both the good and the bad parts. The question I have to ask, of both heroines however, is why these women think they can be bullheaded and impulsive when they are dealing with vampires! Maybe they need to pick up an old copy of Salem's Lot. THE GOOD: The historical aspects covered in this book (Harkness is a history professor) really add a certain depth to the story and to the vampire character. Harkenss also has a wine blog, and I loved that she made her vampire a wine connoiseur. The beginning of the story is very believable and I liked toying with the idea that vampires, witches and daemons exist among us. THE BAD: Rather than escalate the love story with more conflict, Harkness's heroine makes rash and stupid decisions that not only jeopardizes her relationship, but her life, as well. At times the narrative read more like a text book than a great piece of fiction and I felt teased with a lack of descriptions on certain things and overdone descriptions on others. I felt that there was a lot of narrative that was unnecessary. It did not advance the plot and became almost tedious at times; I did not need to know every time the heroine took a nap or indulged in a cup of tea. THE UGLY: Some of the scientific explanation made me feel like I was back in a biology lecture (yawn!). The second half of the story just collapsed into cliches and easy explanations. I don't know if I'll be along for book two of the trilogy.

There's no denying this is a romance novel - albeit cleaner than most. However, the author really tries to push her underlying message about slavery in the modern world. This is her first in a series of four books (although the characters from this one don't show up again until the fourth) and all were pretty good. Nice light reading with a serious message underneath.

Margareth Duras is a long poem, in different books with different verses.

I dug the dueling banjo story telling (old Jacob / young Jacob.) However felt the ending was kind of goofy. But not goofy enough to ruin the preceding story.

I remember that I really enjoyed reading Fatal Judgment: A Novel, the first book in the Guardians of Justice Series and was looking forward to this one. Overall this plot was a bit macabre for my taste, just too much. I was nervous and uncomfortable and completely creeped out. Yet I hear that a creep out factor is a good thing in suspense. Anyway, I wanted to stop, but I had to keep going to know what would happen in the end. It is interesting to me how I can watch television shows with similar situations, but reading them in a book going at the pace that I can find the time to dive in the logos is another matter. Irene Hannon is masterful with a pen and writes a good and catching story. I was captivated from the very beginning. I love characters and I despised the ones that were meant to be despised, but at the same time (thanks to Mary Connealy) I also often find myself looking for redemption in the evil characters. While not my favorite genre, Irene definitely kept the pages turning and I will look for more from her in the future. *Thanks to Revell Books for providing a copy for review.* Originally posted: http://creativemadnessmama.com/blog/2...

** spoiler alert ** I really enjoyed the beginning of the book as well as the middle half with Lucy. I liked seeing how David first was, and then how he changed as things became more personal for him. By the end though he seemed to be sort of regressing, and I never fully grasped the ties between the specific relationships and South African relationships as a whole. The ending was really upsetting for me too. It had closure, but was very depressing. It seemed to be saying "You can't prolong the inevitable, so just give up early." If I could make better sense of the ending, I may bump it up to four stars.

Apparently I'm a sucker for a pretty cover. This book looked so promising sitting all pretty in the library bookshelf next to the other drabby books. It just screamed to get picked up. However, much to my disappoint the content was boring. I got 100 pages in and I just couldn't continue anymore with the snooze fest. ****Potential Spoilers**** There wasn't much to Leah who is the female protagonist. Her father suffered a lost and her reputation ruined. Um, okay what else? Yeah, she's now a loyal servant in her uncle Pontius Pilate's house, yet he wants to set her up in a "strategic marriage". Did I miss something here? Someone who wants to marry up is not going to want to marry a lowly servant...well, at least the last time I checked. Apparently, Pontius' power is so great and Leah is so wonderful Alban can't pass up. Alban, if you haven't guess is the male hero. All brains and good looks. Oh, yeah and of course he's the stereotypical fearless leader who all the men respect and doesn't loose any of his men in battle. *yawn* So there I pretty much summarize the first 100 pages for you. I would like to get repaid in time please. I'm still counting it for my read shelf because I wasted time reading the 100 pages. I definitely won't be picking this one up again.
