This is one of the most stunning books I've read as it is a very alternative interpretation on a pretty well known story. It was black listed by the pope for its portrayal of Christ as a man with humanly desires and frustrations. An interesting twist turns Mary Magdalene into the woman Jesus was supposed to marry from childhood; another one questions Judas as the betrayer...Very interesting book. I still think about it and it's been about 6 years since I read it.

The thing that I like about this book is that it's written by a fellow curmudgeon who likes to complain about the current state the world. Hey! I like to do that too! For most of the book Mr. Franzen bemoans the decline of the literary novel, the wastefulness of modern society, the miserly plight of the working author, the degeneration of culture and the questionable morality of the criminal justice system. He complains a lot. But Mr. Franzen's complaints are not like my complaints. That's to say, his complaints are very well thought out and researched and filled with great vocabulary. The book may feel like almost three hundred pages of bitching, but for the most part it feels like constructive bitching, even if Franzen doesn't offer any cures for the societal ills he exposes. "Hey!" he yells, waving his arms, "America! Are you blind! Look at the mess we're in!" Franzen does what any sociologist is supposed to do: he holds up a mirror to American society. Or... American society circa 1996. Yes, a lot of these essays seem sadly dated (it adds a whole new level of irony to the book when Mr. Franzen complains that the breakneck speed at which technology is advancing has caused his typewriter to be replaced with CD-ROMs). Frequent references are made to the Clinton administration. I feel that the book is at its best when Franzen writes about things he loves like his family or New York or St. Louis. When he writes about things he loves it's easier to read. It doesn't take a book of essays by a respected author to know that the world is a dark, fucked-up place. Anyone can tell you that. Which is why we need to focus on the few lights left in it: home, family, love. I'd like to see somebody write at length about those things without resorting to Hallmark sentiment or cliche. I'd read essays about that.

I think this is James Baldwin's first novel, racey for it's time. I can't recall the details but it has definitely left an impression on me. It deals with a sexual relationship between a black man and an italian. It's a short read, but powerful nevertheless. I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in James Baldwin.

It would be a mistake to view Raymond Francis' Never Fear Cancer Again as a book solely about preventing Cancer. What the book is really about is health and how to maintain it. Right from the start, Francis makes it clear that all disease originates in the cells, and that the only path to health -- whether that's curing Cancer or any other disease -- is to heal the cells. This is the central tenet of the book, which is all about how to avoid or cure cellular malfunction and thereby maintain or regain wellness. Francis is extremely critical of the modern medicine, particularly what he calls the Cancer industry. The book cites alarming statistics about conventional medicine's lack of success with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, all of which, Francis states, cause and promote, rather than heal, Cancer. It's pretty shocking stuff, as is the statement that conventional medicine in general is some 100 years behind biological science and that most modern doctors are irrelevant at best and dangerous at worst. While this may be a big statement to take on-board, the Six Pathways, framework is clear and easy to understand and on an intuitive level alone, makes excellent sense in terms of living a high quality, healthy, disease free long life. It also aligns perfectly with Max Gerson, Victoria Boutenko and other proponents of self-healing through diet, exercise, reduction of stress, etc. The first part of the process is to eliminate what's making you sick - remove what Francis calls "The Big 4" from your diet - that is sugar, white flour, processed oils, and dairy/excess animal protein, replacing processed, highly toxic foods with organic, unprocessed fresh fruit and vegetables, legumes, sprouts, raw nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Other ways to get healthy include removing the toxins from our life. This is suprisingly difficult, since nearly everything in our houses, from the carpets to our toothpaste, our water, our clothing, and even our vehicles is toxic. I found this chapter a little alarming, and while there are certainly alternatives available for many of the toxic items Francis points out, it can be paralysing to think about how many alternatives to what we're already using are required. Exercise, visualisations, getting adequate sunlight, and avoiding drugs and surgery at all costs are also key paths to wellness. The simplicity of the Beyond Health model makes it very attractive, and certainly for those of us who are interested in staying well and avoiding diseases of all kinds the advice in this book is easy to accept and very worthwhile. Eating less junk food and more fresh vegetables and fruit and raw healthy grains, sprouts and nuts can only do us good, as can reducing our exposure to toxins and perhaps supplementing with a good multi-vitamin and fish oil at least. Few people, including medical doctors, would argue that the traditional Western diet is severely deficient, or that most people don't get enough exercise, fresh air and sunlight, and live lives that are chronically stressful. Beyond that, a difficult choice has to be made. Do you accept that modern medicine has it terribly wrong, not only with the ubiquitous treatment of Cancer, but with the treatment of ailments of all kinds, from diabetes to asthma, heart disease to the treatment of infection, and simply stop asking for treatment for these conditions, instead going the full hog with alternatives? That's a question that each individual will have to answer for his or herself and it's not easy to buck the entire medical establishment, eschewing everything from antibiotics to vaccinations. I haven't yet made up my mind on this point, and I'm sure I'll be hedging my bets for some time to come. In the meantime, the healthier you are and the closer you follow advice like Francis', the less chance there is that you'll have to make that difficult choice. Prevention certainly, as Francis points out many times in Never Fear Cancer Again is much easier than cure. An interesting and likeable book set in Shadow Falls - a camp for troubled teens who turn out to be a bunch of paranormal freaks - vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies. With all its good parts, I'm just not sure of the plot which seems to take you all over the place with several possible love interests and the unresolved question of what Kylie actually is. Seems to be a book full of possibilities that lead to nowhere in particular?! While slightly annoying, I'm looking forward to reading Awake at Dawn to see where the author takes the story.

This is the only book you need to have if you want to learn Mac OS/X, Objective-C Programming. The examples in the book follow XCode 3 but I didn't have much difficulty in adapting them to XCode 4. The flow is engaging, examples are interesting and comprehensive. I found everything I needed for the app I am working on. Thoroughly recommended. 5/5 stars. Note this book covers Mac desktop apps. There is another one from the same author "iPhone Programming The Big Nerd Ranch Guide" that I keep an eye on too, that would be my next book.

This is a good read for boys and reluctant readers in the YR/intermediate range, nice and skinny! ;-) Girls will like it, too--the girls here are strong and thoughtful, supplying the gentler side without losing their ability to stand up for themselves. Cori and his cellmate Pippa are slaves for the Spears, who force them to dig for the shards that cling to the roots of the grass, and subject them to punishment and death for the slightest infraction. They're slaves without free time, always on the edge of starvation, never knowing if they will be separated, with their cellmate being their only real friend. That's the way things have been for years, until Cori befriends two newcomers, Tia and Bran, and the Spears begin to act strangely. War has come, and somehow these slaves have to learn to think for themselves and survive. I'm off to get the next book, which is out already. If it's as good as this one, I'll be looking for the third, which comes out this fall.

Not his best work, but I still enjoyed it. His whole I'm writing a story where the main character is called Bret Easton Ellis and he wrote American Psycho, etc. thing is mainly obnoxious but occasionally funny. The Terby freaked me out.

ZOMBIES. IT COULD HAPPEN. And if it does, it behooves you to read this manual that includes, among other things, of how to properly dispose of a zombie carcass.
