What can I say? I'm into the whole water theme at the moment! This short novella (my version was less than 100 pages) was an adventure from start to finish. About an old man who decides to go out farther than usual in his skiff after 84 days of nothing. He nets the biggest marlin he's ever seen, and then runs into some trouble on the way home. Though chocked full of metaphorical/figurative implications, the literal read is also very satisfying. Could have finished the whole thing in one sit down, but wanted to savor it over the space of a few days.

I officially love, love, love Lahiri and will read her novel next, though short stories definitely work for me when I am feeling busy at work...

I have been moved by this book. Not only does Lappe give tangible suggestions for how to eat in a more health conscious way, she goes deeper to explain how the actions we take at the dinner table and beyond impact people around the world. Lappe, while clearly an expert in her field, makes clear and understandable connections between the economics and politics of poverty to our own lives. I would be shocked if those who agree with her aren't moved to change their eating and buying decisions after reading this book.

This made me cry. I had seen the film before reading the book, which I dont normally do, but once I found it was a book I had to read it.

Daphne du Maurier is one of my favorite writers, but sometimes she seriously misfires. (i.e., The Glass Blowers) This book isn't exactly a misfire. It's more of just a crappy shot. This is sort of a mix of Jane Eyre and Gone With the Wind. But since the author is neither Charlotte Bronte nor Margaret Mitchell, this book just doesn't work. Du Maurier's most amazing works are Juluis, Rebecca, and My Cousin Rachel. When you see books like The King's General, The Parasites, and The Flight of the Falcon with crappy ratings on Amazon.co.uk (don't use amazon.com for reliable Du Maurier ratings -- she's British, has a British audience, and the reviews on .com are by the same two people) it's for a reason.

I very much liked the style of the writting in this novel but I just didn't agree on everything that was mentioned.

I have read a couple of Diane Chamberlain's books... and I am expecting good things from this book as well.

I finally got around to this one! It's an amazing story of Greg Mortenson's brave efforts to build schools for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan. You could not have blamed him for quitting many times over in the face of so many hardships and dangers, but he is still going strong. Check out his work at www.ikat.org.
