Amerika was fun, absurd with possible existential ties. It was fun to read a translation, especially because the other translation portrays different themes. Fun diction, a lot of homosexual/dandy references, Amerika as opportunity, confinement, the role of women, light/darkness in the book are all interesting points. The end of the book is choppy andliterally unfinished. I don't know, if Kafka couldn't even finish his great comedy, was it worth it for me to?

I didn't know I wasn't supposed to like this book and absolutely enjoyed the armchair travel and foods. If the author displayed a healthy ego, so what? It was a fun read.

This was a series of sex scenes tied together by a pyschic serial killer mystery. When you're reading about brutality, your eyes can skip what it can't handle. When you're listening, you get the full force. Feehan describes evil in its truest form. The narrator was excellent. But the story, the romance between Kaden and Tansy, was too fast and too sex based. Not to mention that Kaden's behavior was really not short of abusive. He may not have lifted a hand to her, but he was going to make sure that she was never alone, had no control over her life and thought that that's the way it's supposed to be, but he can go out and do his job because he's the man. The sex scenes came one after another, to the point where you had to ask how they had time to solve the murder.

This book was written well before Barack Obama had political aspirations (or at least political aspirations on a national level), so I thought it gave a little bit more insight into him as a person. He brings up some very personal issues about race and what it was like growing up black in a white household. The book chronicles his journey in search of his own identity, finding - like many of us - that there is no single answer. The memoir shows a depth to Obama, one you don't usually get a chance to see in politicians. It is an intensely personal story that he tells, but one he makes accessible to his reader. This books stands on its own as a well-written, thoughtful story. The fact that it is about a national politician is striking in this regard, and to me makes it a must read.

I read this book years ago, and I completely fell in love with it. The characters are wonderful and the story is truly engaging. It is a book that has stuck with me over the years, partially due the small but perfect role of the architecture students which I was at the time. Definitely among my all time favorites.
