*Note* There may be spoilers but I didn't take the time to check As a fan of the series I was severely disappointed. There was so little interaction between characters that it was hard to get all the way through. I in fact had to force myself to read it instead of reading my other book. All the characters that we have grown to know and love were all but completely left out, they may have had a cameo here and there but otherwise were completely absent. When they did show up they were often useless, or just a simple plot device to keep things moving. It was also very disappointing because of how repetative it was. I understood from the beginning that she would see her past lives, and likely past deaths, over and over again. I did not expect her to make the same silly decisions over and over. She did not learn from her mistakes, in fact I was surprised that she gleaned anything from her journey whatsoever except for "Daniel is pretty" or some such idiotic thought. I understood that the book was trying to make sense of her emotions and get her in a place where she also chooses Daniel, but all of this could have been done within a single chapter and using an entire book for it was a waste. In addition the author tried to reach way beyond where her meager talents lie. She is not a historical fiction author and should stick with the present. Her descriptions of the past were boring and obvious, but that might be because she chose to use the most stereotypical moments from the past that she could find. Not only was Luce's past self a Princess at one point she was also present during both World Wars, was supposed to marry Louis IX (I think it was that one anyways) was also supposed to marry a great Chinese King, was a human sacrifice for the Mayans and was an actress (pretending to be an actor a la "Shakespeare in Love") at the Globe theatre. Not only that but SHE burned the Globe Theatre down. With each historical incarnation I groaned, waiting for the silly frilly dresses and idiotic balls and pointless fight scenes that would follow. Not only were the historical setting annoying, they were also useless, the well described backdrops did nothing to further the plot, but instead were an experimental showcase for the author, at which she failed. When the time comes I will read the final book, I have gotten too far in the series to give up now. I only hope that she realizes what a horrible misstep she has taken and works her way back into the modern world where she can develop characters more. I will say I love her characters and the life she gives them, it was one of the problems with the book. She had too many wonderfully drawn characters who disappeared in the blink of an eye leaving us with nothing. In the meantime the characters we know and love (and love to hate) and woefully absent and are not given any depth. There is too much development of modern Luce and Daniel, in fact they are really the only characters we follow. Anyways I hope that the Cam's and Roland's and Miles' of the story get to come back in and work on their connections with Luce and Daniel, for if they do not there will not be anything worth reading in the last book. I don't expect greatness of Lauren Kate, but I do expect entertainment, the main reason why I read the first two books. In this instance she fell far short, not entertaining and not moving the plot forward. I feel as though I could pick up the fourth book without having missed anything in between. Please let "Rapture" be a good conclusion to an up and down series!
