Another poker classic but this one has parallel narratives: the Binion murder case and the 2000 World Series of Poker. McManus dropped his freelance fee for Harper's on the buy-in for the WSOP and improbably made the final table. At the same time, the Ted Binion murder trial was taking place (Binion was an heir to the Binion casino fortune, which included hosting rights to the WSOP). I especially enjoyed McManus's literary allusions, which provided nice dissonance with his subject matter. I did, however, find the last forty or so pages of the book completely extraneous. Do I really need the close-up look at the Vegas strip clubs McManus frequented? His editor should have guided him a bit more here, I feel. It had little to no relevence to the narrative--and his attempt to explain it away by paralleing his experience with Binion's penchant for strip clubs was pretty weak. But overall, a really enjoyable read.

For the most part, I am not a huge fan of non-fiction. However, Barbara Ehrenreich's portrayal of the working lower class was really interesting. It's not often that you get a chance to read about a firsthand encounter as life as an unskilled worker. I didn't love everything about the book, but I think Ehrenreich did a great job at telling the story and really took a chance putting herself in that situation.

Decent Sci-Fi read about life that developes on the surface of a neutron star. Definately not character based. But best part - at the end of the book there is an appendix, and at the end of the appendix there is a list of references, some of them fake, but others are actual references to speculative papers (and magazine articles) of how life may develop on neutron stars.

Type: Novel How I Heard About It: My friend Jordan wrote a paper on it for psychology class on the possibilities of animal language. She got a good grade so I figured it was worth a read. How I procured it: The Wooster Book Company Ratings (1-5) Story: 4.5 Writing: Don't remember Would I read it again? Yes, in fact it's in my queue right now. Who would I recommend it to? Science lovers, animal lovers, anyone who loves a good intriguing story. Did it remind me of anything? Not at the time, although I think of it often now because it so often sounds like my dog is trying to speak to us. Comments: This novel kept me extremely involved, since I finished it in one night. Even though I'm not a linguist or a scientist and don't really understand the issues of dog language, I appreciated the cause and found what these people were doing in the novel to be horrendous. I found myself being like, "Don't do that!" at parts and cried at other parts. This novel totally made me want a dog, just because of all the comfort his dog was giving him after such a tragedy. The flashbacks to their relationship were amazingly cute, I found the wife's job so interesting. I love language and linguistics, so his fascination with words also kept my interest. And of course the dogs... Written simply yet flowing, the style was easy to follow and the structure with the flashbacks was very appealling. I'd find myself going back and forth because she'd stop a scene in the middle and I'd be hanging dry.
