It was fascinating to check back with Snowball, and his second chance with the farm. John Reed's animal characters hold a mirror to the continuing saga of evolving economics and human foibles.Good read.

this does not quite have the same wild pulsing energy of the original, nor the shock of the new, but it does have something of the tension (in fact on second thought it has more, and a better quality of tension for that matter) and deepens the story as any good sequel should, it does however feel like 'the difficult second book' but it rises to the challenge and smacks it down by providing a different tone, the first book is that bright and fiery red, this is a quizzical blue, still it doesn't quite grab you the same way the original does.

Great historical novel about the conquest of Chile. Strong female protagonist worth reading in either English or Spanish.

I think Sourcery is really the book where Pratchett starts to hit his stride as a writer. The humour gets more refined and more pervasive - in addition to at least one laugh per page, there are now numerous places where you can pause and smile a little to yourself. The little injokes he works in are used much more subtly in comparison to, say, The Colour of Magic - even if you don't know enough about the subject he's poking fun at, it's not blatant enough for you to feel irritated by it, or else it's subtle enough that you don't even notice it in the text. This is very different from TCoM, where the Wyrmberg section was a clear parody of a certain series of fantasy novels that I've not read, and large sections of which consequently went right over my head, to my annoyance. Rincewind's character is developed much more in this, to the point where he's... well, not quite a hero. A reluctant coward forced into the role of a hero, perhaps. With half a brick in a sock. I'd still stick with Sam Vimes any day, though. The characters of Coin, Conina and Nijel also had a lot of potential, and I can't help but wish that Pratchett had developed them a bit more - especially Coin. It would have given the scene between him and Rincewind at the end a lot more kick. Still and all, a good read.

What fantastic read about this ins and outs of poetry! The joy of it, the patterns, the constructions, the love of poems. It does not read like a "how-to" but as a friend discussing why she loves writing poems. My dad gave this to me as I started teaching creative writing, and it now lives on my desk at school with all my favorites.

I have read this book multiple times. It was the first book in the Vorkosigan series that I read. I have since read them all and now realize that this is probably the most awkward entry point I could have chosen for the series. This would explain my original 3 star rating, which I have now changed to 5. This last reading was an audio book. I think this is a great way to re-read this book, but might not be the best as a first reading because of the many Vor based names in this book. (might be hard to keep track) Full of fun and twisty intrigue.

Krakauer makes no qualms about admitting that he finds McCandless fascinating because he reminds him of his younger self. I can't fault him for this, but as I don't empathize (or even sympathize) with McCandless, the result is a book that doesn't hold my interest. Perhaps its unfair of me to rate down a book that I simply was not the target audience for, but, as its wildly popular, I think its useful to have a warning for people like me. If you don't fall into the following categories you might not like it: a teenager/young adult that feels displaced in his/her life and longs for escape, the parent of said teenager, or someone who acutely remembers what it feels to be that teenager. Also, you're going to be frustrated with McCandless. Don't take this as a knock at Jon Krakauer's writing. I've read two of his other books - Into Thin Air and Under the Banner of Heaven (a personal favorite) - and I very much enjoy his writing. And its precisely because he has a personal involvement with his subject matter. He's not simply making observations on the human condition, he's experiencing it along with the people he writes about. Its especially striking in Under the Banner of Heaven, an examination of religious extremism using the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints as a case study.

The first half of this book is wildly entertaining. I think that sort of got lost in all the debate around the book-- it's really funny, and it's clearly MEANT to be funny. The second half gets a little bogged down and it sort of lacks focus; there's a LOT of classical music involved, and I like classical music, so it wasn't such a problem for me, but that won't be true for everyone. The last chapter (in which the author openly admits to not knowing how to wrap this thing up) is also good, and sort of regains some of the "thoughtful but fun" dynamic of the first half. It also gives the daughters, the focus of the book, an ability to respond to all that's said about them throughout. Overall, this was an extremely fast read because it is short, the chapters are very short, and it's easy to read (the author is a good writer, and it's funny). Well worth finding out what all the fuss is about.

i put off reading this book. the other reviews were so fantastic, i thought i had to earn the reading of daughter of smoke and bone. i have to say, though, that i was not impressed. i liked karou as a character, but i didn't believe in her feelings for akiva, nor his for her. it was all too sudden, too unrealized. i want a believable buildup, not a snap reaction. as for the general layout of the book, i liked the initial setup of karou's life. but suddenly, it becomes another book. tangents of the past branch off and take over. then there are tangents within tangents and then suddenly were pulled back into the present without much warning or grace. the transitions were jerky. the past storyline didn't do much for me. i care more about karou's present than what happened in the past. the connection didn't make me feel anything in particular. overall, i felt the characters' emotions were shallow and without merit. the plot had potential, which it failed to live up to. it was an okay read, but i doubt i will read its sequel.

Incredible story! But I guess I'm a traditionalist when it comes to writing style - I found the style and format distracting, and, for me, took away from the power of the story. I LOVED the relationship between Liesel and her foster father Hans.
