I didn't read much in the way of literature during my teenage years but I have mostly made up for that time lost, now in my early 20s, by having devoured all of the Twilight and Harry Potter books in about a year, and now embarking on an obsession with The Hunger Games series. In truth (and not in a "I'm-superior"-way) I think reading all of these novels with a little more life in my years has provided some edge in the ways which I sympathize the many of the plights of these "young adult" characters have been facing, and to also be able to greatly appreciate just how well-written these books really are. They may not all be modern masterpieces, but their authors were most certainly on to something with themes that transcend their narrow categorization of "young adult," and whose overall appeal, I think, is most certainly not limited to it. The Hunger Games had me right from the get go. Suzanne Collins makes the world of Panem believable; I didn't doubt for a moment that this could realistically become the future of the world we live in (as sad and sorry as that would be). I told others I knew about how *catchy* the entire plotline was, about how breezy the writing was, and I then blazed through my digital copy clinging to the cliff-hanger feelings given throughout. Our protagonist, female tribute from District 12 Katniss Everdeen, is a shining example of a strong and intelligent female lead. An unassuming, resourceful, cunning fighter, she is the center of this novel and for all the right reasons. I admit that my initial interest in reading The Hunger Games was sadly prompted by news that they were next book series in line for their movie franchise in 2012, and given how much I know myself and knowing that I'd PROBABBBBLY want to see them, I knew that I would first want to be fully armed with the books before the movies landed. What a wonderful pay-off it turned out to be in the end. And for once, this was not a series where most of the storyline has been previously spoiled for me so I will do the favor to others and avoid any comments that might ruin any part of the reading experience in any way for anyone. If there's one thing you need to know it's this: just trust the hype! There always tends to be a good explanation about why so many people congregate so strongly (and obsessively) around certain books, and you will be able to tell for yourself within the first several pages if you agree with it too. I am now extremely excited to start Catching Fire and see where this is all heading!!!

I'll admit it first up: this book was hard going. Not because it was difficult to read, it wasn't, but because there wasn't much in it that held my attention. And I think that's more my problem than the book's. This is heroic fantasy and as such lives up to much heroic fantasy that I've read in the past. And therein lies the problem. Perhaps heroic fantasy just aint my thing. It's essentially a quest story centred around a group of fighters called The Raven who try to find a number of relics so they can cast a spell, "Dawntheif" which will save the world from the Wytch Lords. As it goes, the story is fine, the characters are fine but for me there was something missing. I never really got to know any of the characters, never really got inside their heads. Never really understood the magic system or who the bad guys were. The Wytch Lords and the Wesmen that they command were a bunch of generic bad guys who are talked about a lot but make very few appearances. Wesmen = bad, Raven = good. Too clear cut for me. Give me goodies that you can't tell apart from the baddies. Give me baddies who show good qualities. Just like real humans the world over. This could have been a great tale if there was more depth to it. That said, if you want an easy to digest adventure tale that you can escape into for a time, this will do the trick.
