As the train came to a halt, a middle-aged black man walked up to me. “Paul Theroux”, he pointed at my book. “He’s a great author! I read his book about a train journey. From the East coast of the US to the West coast. Amtrak, trains’ walls made of Perspex. Marvelous!” I said I hadn’t read it yet, but it sounded promising. “Indeed!” The man leaned in to me a bit. “I saved all my money, and then I went there, with my wife. The train went straight through the Rockies!” And with a twinkle in his step, he wished me a pleasant day, as he walked out of the compartment. Back home, I finish my Theroux. Not on trains in the States, but on a dead hand in Calcutta. Reading about an author with writer’s block, who gets entangled in the web of a woman who makes his Kundalini flow, set in dirty bewitching India, I cannot agree more. Paul Theroux is a great author. Even though I have never been to India myself, it now almost feels as if I have. Still, part of the story gets me annoyed: Men and their blind adoration for pretty women. Yawn. Best read in train or on plane.

Took me just a few days (quick, for me) and it immediately became one of my favorite books I'd ever read. Read it a few times since and it keeps getting better.

So perfect. I particularly liked how the two books within it ("Franny" and "Zooey") echoed the structure of the two Pilgrim books, one about going out in the world and talking about the Jesus Prayer, the other a dialogue concerning the Prayer. Salinger, you clever bastard.

This book was really nicely crafted, the characters had multiple dimensions, and plot was really interesting. Nicely done.

I haven't read a book about the Beatles for awhile and decided I'd like to see what's out there. My local library is small and didn't have much. Then I found this book and felt that I'd hit the jackpot. I've always been intrigued by the whole Pattie/George/Eric triangle. What a great way to hear about it from Pattie herself. I think she's a brilliant writer. I'm 3/4 of the way through and it's been one of those books that I just can't put down. In fact I could have had it read by now, but I'm delaying it, savoring it, because I don't want it to end. It's been so interesting to learn about Pattie herself and her upbringing. I've never known much about her, just her name and I know I've seen a few pictures of her with the Beatles. My husband's not much of a book reader, but as I've told him a bit about what I'm reading, he's wanted to learn more and I've been reading it to him. I think it's great that she's so honest about everything she went through and remembers. It's been quite a ride. I admire her and think she's a beautiful person inside and out. My heart ached for her as I read about her heartaches. I'm so happy that I came across this book. If you want to know the story of Pattie, George and Eric, why look anywhere else? If you love learning about the Beatles lives, this is a great book to turn to as well. Well done Pattie, for having the courage and strength to write this! Even though I'm not quite finished reading it, it's been one of the best books I've read in a long time. Yours is a story that has deeply touched me.

Good book to read for two reasons - 1 - a better understanding of our place as adopted into the family of God. 2years - a good overview of Christian's places in adopting children. My eyes have been opened and my understanding increased.

I know...I know...it's Jane Fonda, the woman who invented the Jane Fonda aerobics workout in the 80's,m but trust me, if you're into biographies, this is one of the most raw and revealing ones I have ever read. It not only touches on a life in the spotlight, but it very politically charged (ie: "Hanoi Jane") and historically informative.

Vargas Llosa makes the socially marginalized object of hackneyed poverty statistics into the subject of a engrossing murder mystery.

Vonnegut says this is as close as he'll come to his autobiography. He wrote it shortly after his sister passed away. It is funny, sad, satirical, and wonderful (as are most his books). On a side note, when Vonnegut graded his work in another of his essays, he gave this one a C. I disagree--I give it at least a B+/A-

A quick read, and enjoyable, but without a lot of substance. Perfect for light, easy reading.
