Depending on your mood, this may take a bit of getting into. I was studying it for second year Literature in my undergrad degree, so I was examining it as I read. The second time I read it, that is. The first time I think I was a bit overwhelmed. My choice of relaxation reading is action-driven fantasy with a fast-moving plot, so the layering of detail in the tiny tome required more concentration from me than I gave it the first time round. The second reading was much better and very rewarding, and left me with a seriously hefty respect for Pynchon (despite his real-life oddness) and his ability to pack a lot of stuff into not many words. Even The Simpsons has a reference to Pynchon in one of the episodes. It was written in the sixties and questions a lot of attitudes and systems (awesome!) and if you're paying attention to the detail of what is going on, you'll probably be wondering about your own sanity by the end, as you question what is fact and what is fiction, real and unreal. I had to do quite a bit of internet research to untangle the facts from Pynchon's fiction, which shows just how magnificently he manipulates the written word. Highly recommended.

An excellent book about classroom life and the experiences of teachers. Probably more geared towards educators than lay people, but very accessible.
