The author is a talented writer, with an ability to capture details and create settings without being too flowery. I was impressed he was able to write quite convincingly from the perspective of such a complicated female protagonist. Dolores was sassy and flawed, and I liked that about her. However, I did not find this book particularly entertaining. It certainly wasn't uplifting or inspiring for me. Several times I wondered why I continued to read when it seemed the main character could never catch a break and that everything bad that could happen to her did. It was a bit too graphic for my taste. But it reminded me once again that just because Oprah puts her stamp on something does not mean that it will be worthwhile to me.

OK, really. It was a great page-turner because the plot was tight, and not a bad airplane read - but COME on – Bella was a terrible character. I’m really disappointed in her. She has NOTHING going for her aside from her vampire boyfriend and I think their relationship is icky. Don’t leave me! I don’t want to eat you/ I want to eat you. WHA WHA – while he snicker snickers superiorly. Does she evolve AT ALL over the series? Does Edward get to be anything other than perfect? I get that she’s a miserable teenager struggling with school/ body image/ popularity etc.– but she has no hobbies – no other interests – nothing that makes her interesting. And down on birthdays, really? Down on prom? Hard to believe. And she’s a bit over-impressed by the “perfection” of the vampire crew and totally unappreciative of the human people that surround and love her. Basically – I think she was a BRAT. In contrast – Joss Weedon’s Buffy. HELLO! That was a character – empowered – self reliant etc. etc while just as vulnerable to vampire boyfriends – and other teenage maladies. Someone convince me to keep going with Twilight. I think my late night/trashy novel junk media quotas might be better served with more Dr. Who episodes… or Roswell... hot boyfriends from outer space…

Another brilliant novel by Wally Lamb. And one I found very difficult to put down. Wally Lamb has a interesting writing style and I find myself caring deeply about the characters ; and very quickly. One of the things I enjoyed about this book was the reference's to characters from a previous novel. Enjoyed hearing a bit about Dr Patel and Dominic Birdsey. A nice link between novels. I felt very moved at the end of the book and close to tear's. Hightly recommend this book. Wally Lamb's books are not 'easy' but worthwhile. Very clever to base some of this book on fact with the Columbine killings (and shocking too - found it upsetting to read about about what the family's and survivors may have gone through). It is a shame that Wally Lamb doesn't bring out novels more often but it is worth the wait!

Hmm. This is the book club pick for January 2013, and I didn't even remember that I've already read it (and only gave it 3 stars...). I'll have to give it another chance. I give it 4 stars on the re-reading. I can't believe I forgot that I read this (though it was a long time ago...).
