A very clear analysis of 4 post-colonial works of Canadian fiction (including for my own purposes, Joy Kogawa and SKY Lee). Darias-Beautell engages both Derrida and Foucault to unravel the (con)textual and (inter)textual influences in Asian Canadian writing. With a firm focus on textuality, Darias-Beautell excavates the historical, political and cultural circumstances that are in dialogue with the plot. The intertextuality analysis was a fascinating look at how the tone/and structure of Lee's novel are engaging pop culture (romance novels and melodramatic cinema) and cultural elements of Chinese opera to create a counter cultural statement. Using the book for an essay on SKY Lee's Disappearing Moon Cafe. Great explanations. Concise and well organized.

What's there to say? A classic in every sense of the word. Frighteningly current to today's world.

I didn't feel much of his book was helpful regarding manners. It was more of a "survival guide" or "how to" to various situations gay men might find themselves in. When he tried to talk about lesbians, it seemed clear to me that he had no idea what they are about, and I was wondering why he bothered to include them in this book. His comment that you should also say "thank you" to anyone who does oral on you was just the weirdest thing ever. I'm like: "Thank you"? What sort of terrible lover says thank you and then fails to reciprocate or keep the energy flowing with something else. "Thank you" is like: "Okay, shoo now, trick."

I've read all the Maximum Ride books. If you are still a child at heart, and loved Harry Potter, you will enjoy this series. My oldest grand son loves them too and it's fun having a book to discuss with him.

i loved this book. it was tremendously moving, especially in light of the personal biography of david grossman. everything about it is brilliant, and its probably just me but i've felt the last half dozen books over 400 pages that i've read have lacked a really good editor. he goes on for a bit too long. but it is well worth the effort to get through it.

A good introductory book on philosophy of mind. His main point is that both dualism and materlism are wrong.

this book wasn't quite as exciting as snow crash or cryptonomicon, but it was still entertaining. the idea of a book which is actually a very complicated form of artificial intelligence, which binds with its owner and teaches it how to deal with the real world. as all neal stephenson books go, it is full of references to cyberspace, computers, and hacking. But since it's from his early days, it is complete with his descriptive gory scenes, including one where a character is blown to pieces from the inside (oh my gosh!)

This book reminded me of college. I suppose that doesn't speak especially well of me or my alma matter, but I find the similarities comforting. Also remarkable, is the kalidoscopic narrative Ellis lays out. Written from multiple perspectives, you're never quite sure what happened, thereby embodying the written word's power to be utterly whimsical and subjective. As my post-modern lit prof would have said--It has no center. Pretentious, but true. I hated the film adaptation. Horrid casting, over acting, and a litany of other artistic sins. Better to skip it and read the book.
