I liked it well enough, but the sailing is too smooth for the main heroine. Makes it look uncomfortably like a mary-sue. I like geniuses, but geniuses need to learn first too.

Love a great adventure story, and this is a classic. I remember being read this when I was a kid and being totally mesmerized and haunted by the characters. It's as great, nay, BETTER than it was then. Pick it up, and remember the days when Long John Silver was more than a nasty fried fish joint.

I can't describe my feelings about this book accurately past this: I loved it. Past that, I can't find the words. In some way, the first words that came into my head after reading this was 'Hunger Games'. The plot, the characters, setting, they had nothing in common, but in some strange way they seem to be similar. Maybe it's because they're the same genre, but it seems like more than that. But, it seems to me anyone who liked the hunger Games with like this too.

This book was Laugh out Loud funny and a welcome change after all the emotion charged books of abuse I have been reading lately. I can hear this guys voice, or what I imagine his voice to be like. Gravelly would be the best way to put it. Maybe kind of like George Carlin. Yea that's more like it. The guy that wrote this book is a genius, and so is his dad. We could all stand to learn a few lessons from him.

This is the second book I've read in recent memory about disaster survival, and by far it is the better and more memorable of the two. I think the thing I like the most about Ripley's book is that it has such a strong foundation in disaster science and psychology. I rarely felt like she was tossing out speculation. A lot of study has gone into the hows and whys of disaster survival; I feel like this book does a good job of encapsulating a large portion of that study into relatively short, easy-to-read chapters. I also like how Ripley laid out the chapters according not only to the most common human disaster responses, but in the chronological order in which one is most likely to experience such responses. Each chapter also includes at least one disaster to highlight the response she is discussing in that chapter. I'm so glad that books like this exist. I wish that more people would read them. It's hard to know how one is going to respond in a disaster, so it's good to be aware of what one's most likely response is going to be. Personally, I've always been afraid that I'd be one of those "do nothing" people who just sits there when disaster strikes and doesn't even bother to get out of her seat while the plane goes up in flames or the ship sinks under the waves. It's encouraging to know that the simple fact that I'm informed will likely prevent just such a scenario. Lastly, kudos to Ripley for including a couple of disasters that I had personally never heard of before. For a "disaster buff" like me, that was the highlight of my week!

The quality of Harris' work has taken a fantastic swan dive. I can hardly believe that this was by the same author as Silence of the Lambs. Everything about this book is a failure. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is Harris' warped new take on Hannibal Lecter, which turns him into a sympathetic anti-hero figure. What?! Harris explores Lecter's backstory and exposes the "root of his evil," so to speak. I won't reveal it here in case anyone is still thinking about making the mistake of reading this book, but it is incredibly trite. But if he warps Lecter's character, he practically destroys Clarice Starling. Yes, Thomas Harris somehow managed to ruin two of my favorite characters in all of literature. I suppose that in itself is an accomplishment. I wish I could forget having ever read this book. It has retroactively sullied two otherwise brilliant novels (Lambs and Red Dragon). Oh, and to add insult to injury, it's horribly edited.

at times i found this book highly annoying with a LOT of it being trite, corny and simplified...but at other times i found ti to paint an accurate depcition of what working in a lab can be for some, and thus a good depiction of how science happens it is easy to readm in fact reads like a murder mystery in a lot of ways but there are some passages that do a good job at describing scientists, the pressure, and the workday
