The first great American writer of fiction, working in the form that serves him best, with quick, moody, impressionistic tales that tap into and benchmark American romanticism for all the years after. =The Scarlet Letter= may be better known, but Hawthorne's atmospherics wear out in longer narratives. "The Artist of the Beautiful," "My Kinsman, Major Molineux," and "The Minister's Black Veil" stand out.

While a 'classic' of WWII aviation biography genre, and written by a leading Euro theatre Ace, in my opinion (having read countless from the era) the book did not 'hook' me as others have but was a solid reading bio. Still it comes from a large name flying the same missions with other giants as Gerald Johnson, Hub Zemke, Francis Gabrezki, Bud Mahurin, and names that in the era on the fighter pilot 'rockstar' publicity short list. It does have one of the wildest stories of survival in a crippled plane - the seminal tale of the survivability of the P-47 Thunderbolt - who through thick and thin brought its men home by unbridled power and infamous durability. The more you read the bios, the more you'll hear universal agreement on that attribute if the bird, leading to a Mustang/Thunderbolt ace author of another biography to comment about his own experiences he knew he wouldn't have survived if he'd been in a Mustang at a time or two before he rode one. Personally, I found the experiences of latter pilots more interesting - though they had far less press than the aces of this book's era of mid- WWII, but perhaps my average rating of the book is more of a comment on breadth of experiences which were not afforded the fine Mr. Johnson in his era of almost exclusive bomber escort missions, and that reality of timing prevented the book from being as enthralling as some others. Now it is time to read Gabreski's book to hear the other side of Johnson's tales...

Was offered this book free from the author, but ended up buying it. I thought this was a great story and something we may actually see played out if we continue to let our government grow, unchecked. The only part that really troubled me, kind of a minor criticism, was I thought the author passed up the opportunity to expand the scope of the story by limiting the uprising to just one state, West Virginia. I live in the NW and with the exception of the Portland and Seattle, if Idaho seceded from the Union I could see it having a regional impact possibly pulling in surrounding communities and counties from neighboring states. Sheehan-Miles just seemed too focused on on one state. I also feel that there would be a much bigger rift in the military. This book did open up an additional genre for me. Exploring other authors now, like Rawles and Tappan. Unlike this book, I am finding some of the other books not as well crafted as this. Would like to see more from this author.

Not one of her better books. Good complicated ending but lacks something.

It's been years since I read this, but it has stayed with me. An absolutely enthralling story that sparked my continuing interest in literacy. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how the brain works or in literacy, or enjoys Oliver Sacks' writing.

The year is 1845, the place Sonoma Valley in Alta California. Raised as a Catholic at a Spanish mission in Northern California along with her younger brother before the two of them were taken in to be the servants of a wealthy Mexican family on their ranch, thirteen year old Maria Rosalia de Milagros barely remembers her Indian mother, who died of smallpox when she was six. She doesn't even know who her father was, only that he was a white man, or even what her real name was - Maria Rosalia was the name given to her by Padre Ygnacio, the priest who saved the lives of her and her little brother. Even though she is well treated by the family she works for, the Medinas, Maria Rosalia longs to know who her parents were. Her only hope would be to find Padre Yganico, and she doesn't have any idea where he is after all these years. Still, Maria Rosalia is able to find joy in holidays and celebrations, in writing in her diary, and in a new American friend, but there is a great deal of sorrow as well. This was an excellent addition to the Dear America series (and one of my favorite books in the series) that revealed a great deal about a way of life that has vanished into the depths of time, and taught me about a period in American history that I knew little about.
