my review may be clouded by my great relief of having finished a book for the first time in over a year, but this book came to me at a good time as i was already thinking much about memory-loss and severe weather.

the only reason why i am not giving it four stars is because it took me forEVER to read it. i kept picking it up, but got distracted by end-of-the-year schoolwork. (made it hard for me to get into it.) i'm glad i read it - it's a fascinating, yet troubling story. rainbow farm was such an interesting concept. i was really intrigued by tom and rollie - their relationship, the complexity of their story, how things fell apart. amazing how 9/11 put this story on the back burner - i had no idea that this had happened. for me, there were too many characters, too many names to keep track of. also, i wasn't entirely amazed by the author's writing style - i know he had to get us into the moment, but it was all secondhand information. i questioned some of the scenes. . . still, i would highly recommend this book. matt's review puts my review to shame. so read his review.

I love the Stone Barrington Books and although I thought it was a good book and quick read, it didn't seem to have as much excitement as some of the earlier books.

The reason I bought this book was for one novella: "Winterfair Gifts" by Lois McMaster Bujold, the wedding of Miles Vorkosigan and the star of my favorite book series. As soon as the book came in the mail, I read it immediately and loved it. It was very much a Lois story - wonderfully crafted and highly enjoyable. I then read the other five stories in the collection. It's very odd to find an anthology that contains only stories I enjoyed and loved. Usually, there's a mishmash of some that I love, some that I liked, some that were mediocre, and some that I could barely finish. I loved every story in IR and don't regret paying the 14 dollars for the book at all. The premise of the anthology is a mixing of SF/F and romance, much like what Harlequin books is trying to do right now with their Luna line. However, I think this book far surpasses their Charmed Destinies in quality, talent, and just sheer variety. I already knew and loved Bujold and Asaro; had read a few of Jennifer Roberson's books. But I have never read any of the three romance writers featured in the book. But from the quality of their stories, I may seek them out. The stories in this book show that it is very possible for writers to transcend genre boundaries and do it well. Highly recommended.

This book has been criticized because it doesn't really offer empirical evidence, but I think for those of us who spent time wandering the woods (we had 40 acres that I knew like the back of my hand) as kids, we know what a gift that outdoor time can be for kids. That's why this book is a must-read for parents and educators, I think -- to remind us of what's out there and possible and what we've forgotten. It may be that "nature" therapy can work as a form of behavior therapy for ADHD kids -- and that's fine. But the point that's most important here is that there's a huge world out there that our kids should be experiencing first-hand whenever possible, rather than through a computer screen.

The best little book I have ever seen offering so much information and inspiration for the crafting of better writing. Very informed and credible author who knows her semicolons really well . . . very few do! And she makes it all very interesting while pointing out mere typing is not good writing.

I was enthralled by the life of young Ms Flannery, her relationship to her father, and her delving into the math of cryptography. It shows what young people are capable of when they are inspired to follow their talents and also shows the importance of relationship with parents and elders.

Sing You Home is my new favorite novel by Jodi Picoult, and as of now (mid-March, 2011) my favorite book of this year. There are so many things I wish I could say coherently about this book. I was at a loss of words when I finished it three hours ago, and I still am speechless. But I want to write this review while the emotions it evoked are still at their strongest. The writing was superb as always. Picoult doesn't use a lot of "SAT" vocabulary, or extremely complex sentence structure, but the way she engages readers with detail and finesse is extraordinary. I am always tempted to read just a single page more, then just one chapter more, until I've gone through the entire 400+ page book. I even forgot to put this on my to-read shelf on Goodreads. Picoult's characters are splendid - by the middle of the book I was immersed in Zoe's yearning for children and Max's difficulty with alcohol abuse, and I felt like they were real, breathing people. Vanessa's no-nonsense attitude I admired, and side characters like Dara and Lucy I came to love as well. The element that really made me appreciate this novel was Picoult's take on gay marriage, and homosexual inequality in contemporary society. I cannot adequately state how inspiring this book was to me in that regard. Here is one of the many powerful quotes that I had to stop and re-read (I even put this in my favorite quotes section on Facebook)... "I remember my mother telling me that, when she was a little girl in Catholic school, the nuns used to hit her left hand every time she wrote with it. Nowadays, if a teacher did that, she'd probably be arrested for child abuse. The optimist in me wants to believe sexuality will eventually become like handwriting: there's no right way or wrong way to do it. We're all just wired differently. It's also worth nothing that, when you meet someone, you never bother to ask if he's right- or left- handed. After all: Does it really matter to anyone other than the person holding the pen?" Beautiful. *cross-posted from my blog the quiet voice.
