I can't put my finger on what I liked so much about this book but I think it is one of my favorite fantasies I have ever read. THis was clearly the first book in a series and not many loose ends were tied up by the end, but contrary to finding that irritating, I think it adds to what I enjoyed...this is clearly going to be a sweeping saga with a lot of depth. Most of the basic characters are from the Stark family or their arch enemies the Lannister family, but there are many fringe characters as well. And the characters are what I like best about this book. I like them (even if I hate them) and most are not all good or all evil but very real. I find Tyrion especially fascinating. Thus I an willing and eager to spend 1000s more pages with them. THis book had family angst, intrigue, a mystery, and the good guy does not always win. One of the main characters dies in book one. I really like that (as I did in the tv show LOST) because then you never really know what will happen. You can not say to yourself "Well, this looks bad, but I know it has to turn out okay because he/she is the good guy". Gearge R.R. Martin says he is writing fantasy for adults, and I can heartily say that he is doing a great job! I am ready for book two!

I recommend it to everyone - especially those who tend to take things far too seriously. It has the most interesting views on certain situations and is still valid today - in fact, it may perhaps be just as valid today as it was back when it was published. Definitely a strong influence on my view on life.

This is an odd allegory about order and anarchy, good and evil, and human nature. Police infiltrate a council of English anarchists, leading to a series of chases, disguised enemies, and plot twists. The conversations are often full of comedic puns and wordplay, but are also packed with philosophical statements. I’d need to read it again to fully grasp the symbolism. There are a few hints at its Christian undertones from the beginning, but they really surface at the end. I listened to the free LibriVox audiobook.

This is one of my favorites of all time! I just love everything Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde wrote, honestly I think he was brilliant and his words speak to me in a very meaningful way. Dorian Gray is an unforgettable character and his story is perfect. The darkness swallows him in the same way that it swallows us all - life changes us all into monsters we don't recognize from time to time; Dorian Gray shows us how to look at ourselves, even when we don't want to - because we have to. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK - it is one of the works that helps me define how I perceive the world, and I think it could help anyone who reads it.
