I may not have any kids of my own, but I've been one before and remember something about what it's like. Little Big Minds made me want to go back and have the kind of teacher that Marietta McCarty is. She teaches children about "philosophy" and goes from Socrates to Buddha to modern day philosophers. She lays out the book (which are really her classes for the children) according to concepts such as Love, Courage, Death,Justice , God etc etc and describes how she teaches kids and what their questions and answers are. They are a natural at philosophy - and as they learn, I learned! A wonderful, joyous and thought provoking book, which helped my understand more much more about the wisdom of children, life and myself.

The edition I picked up was published in 1998, so it was a little old, almost comically so when it talked about technology. Still, it gave me a good education on what the publishing industry was like a decade and a half ago, and it sparked several pages' worth of ideas.

Love me some Harry Potter! I think I've read this book about 5 times...and it never ever gets old.

I loved this as a pre-teen.

Eventhough this book is from the 60s I wonder how much has really changed. Maybe it's much more subtle but still there. Just take the enraged/engaged rubric.

A heartbreakingly beautiful love story...odd, modern, funny and utterly unique. I never thought a book about time travel could be presented in the trappings of every-day life, and yet it works wonderfully. One of my top 5 novels of all time. Favorite quotes: "Clare: It's hard being left behind. I wait for Henry, not knowing where he is, wondering if he's okay. It's hard to be the one who stays. Long ago, men went to sea, and women waited for them, standing on the edge of the water, scanning the horizon for the tiny ship. Now I wait for Henry. He vanishes unwillingly, without warning. I wait for him. Each moment that I wait feels like a year, an eternity. Each moment is as slow and transparent as glass. Through each moment I can see infinite moments lined up, waiting. Why has he gone where I cannot follow?" "Henry: How does it feel? It feels exactly like one of those dreams in which you suddenly realize that you have to take a test you haven't studied for and you aren't wearing any clothes. And you've left your wallet at home. When I am out there, in time, I am inverted, changed into a desperate version of myself. I become a thief, a vagrant, an animal who runs and hides. I startle old women and amaze children. I am a trick, an illusion of the highest order, so incredible that I am actually true. I hate to be where she is not, when she is not. And yet, I am always going, and she cannot follow."

a lot of the studies feel dated, but it was still an interesting read.

It took a long time to get through this: summer vacation, summer company, and the challenge of understanding Dickens' style. The study guides I used were very helpful. It was worth the work; it's a beautiful story of love, loyalty and courage.

I think this is my favorite book thus far of Sherlock Holmes. In this book we see a more human Sherlock who doesn't solve the case and gets it wrong. We are introduced to Mycroft, Sherlock's brother who is even more genius, but more lazy (love him) and at the very end meet the ever elusive Moriarty, who catches Holmes. We even have narratives of cases in Holmes own words. Again, I love the short story format, since the stories flow consecutively, but can stand on their own, it's easy to squeeze one in before bed (whiteout getting dragged in to finishing a whole book and losing sleep) or at lunch or something. Big moment at the end w Holmes and Moriarty.

This definitely isn't for all young adults, but I read it with a group of kids who had mostly been to juvenile hall themselves. They could see me as Mark Salzman, and themselves as the kids in the book. They cracked up when we read parts aloud, including the curse words. I'd still say there is an undercurrent that this is mostly a book about a white writer going to juvenile hall to gather stories to write about. Some of the kids/students are pretty memorable, some have tragic stories to tell, and some could do something with their writing. Reading this book requires the right context, in some ways. I had a very clear parallel going on in my life, which made it more meaningful. I also had several built-in critics to read it with me and help me make heads and tails of it. A good read, though not for everyone.
