I read this book ages ago, re-read it a couple of years later. I haven't picked it up in a while, and I'm almost afraid to. It's a story of a Native American family through several generations. There are a lot of fantasy and imagined elements that I worry I might not find as captivating as I did when I was younger, and had just visited the Badlands of South Dakota. There is one scene that has made a permanent imprint on my imagination. A group of young friends drive through the black hills during a rainstorm, after performing a grass dance. Power so perfectly described the scene I can hear the voices, taste the rain, and smell the damp old car even years after I read the passage. I recommend this if you like Louise Erdrich's books, or have a liking of fantasy elements in literature.

I just finished reading this book. While I did certainly enjoy this book, I found one of the secondary characters to be very annoying and I found the premise and subplot a little odd. Anyway as I said this book was enjoyable but certainly not one of her best.

How does a crusade against Islam end up sidetracked into a completely different country? The Fourth Crusade was dominated by a nobility that was trying to build up its credibility by military adventuring, an avaracious collective of merchants, traders and bankers to whom they were indebted, a gullible public--though about 2/3rds of the crusaders quit when they discovered they were going to be fighting Christians instead of the Islamic conquerors of the Holy Land. Thus the Fourth Crusade to free the Jerusalem ended up besieging the walls of Constantinople in April of 1204 A. D. and the destruction and looting of many of the treasures of the Eastern Roman Empire. And in the long run it would make it nearly impossible for the Catholic Church to drum up support for other crusades and lead to the subsequent decline in the fervor to free the holy land. This is a case study of how cynical politics, bad debt and misguided religious beliefs can derail an entire continent. Good thing such things are safely in the past and can't happen again. . .

This was such a treat to read! This book has been quoted so many times, and Mr. Dubner interviewed so many times, that I felt like it was my second (or third or fourth) reading. I loved, LOVED the chapter on 'What Makes a Perfect Parent', particularly the PTA vs. TV evaluation. Rock on Nickelodeon, rock on.
