** spoiler alert ** This is a wonderful book about friendship and surviving loss. In the beginning, these women seem to have nothing in common, but slowly, as thier pasts are discovered, they found something to unite them. In the beginning, this book seemed really depressing. There was so much tragedy and heart ache, even the happiest moments were tinged with sadness and desperation. Part of me knew what Astrid's fate would be, but what surprised me was that I was ok with it. I usually hate it when a character passes, I like my happy endings, but it wasn't a sad passing and the letter to Veronika not only put a smile on my face, but made me feel hopeful. The power of friendship and love conquered a lifetime of sorrow. The story shows it's never too late and opportunities will always be present.

Sexton has always haunted me -- the confessional style pouring out her passion and her depression -- "The Awful Rowing Towards God" especially. Yet, there are poems celebrating married love, sex, and life, too, in this collection.

At my high school, I had to defend this book in a hearing against someone who wanted to censor it and have it removed from the school library. The weird thing is, that year, "Lords of Discipline" was required reading. The Chocolate War was being threatened with censorship because it had scenes of masturbation and scenes of children being cruel to each other. I didn't really like or dislike the book that much, because I had just read Lords of Discipline and so everything was just kind of desensitized to me. But of course it shouldn't be censored. This book is basically like Lords of Discipline only a decade or so younger. If you go from Lords of discipline to The Chocolate war, sex > masturbation, torture > "beating up", etc. plus it eliminates stuff like racism and love and betrayal. The book is all right, but I recommend Lords of Discipline if you want the same lessons (plus a few) to really hit you in the face. I'm just glad that the lady who wanted to censor the book hadn't read Lords of Discipline, she probably would have had a stroke. Down with censorship!

A funny, funny book! For those of us who don't get enough of that fatalistic, sarcastic Eastern European humor in our daily lives, this is a perfect supplement! And the not-so-subtle political commentary doesn't hurt either!

Rurik is the next brother set to break the curse on his father. This next book is decent. I liked learning more about this family of assassins. I want to know why Rurik's woman is named Tasya Hunnicutt. Hunnicutt? O_o Tasya did annoy me a little in her constant denial of her desire for Rurik. When they finally came together, it was no surprise. Overall, a decent fast read. Recommended for those who like paranormal romances with magic and shapeshifters.

Read very quickly on a short flight to Wisconsin. Any Harry Potter fan should read it, but its not the Harry Potter series at all. Just a little extra for the fans.

After hearing rave reviews about this series, I was a bit disappointed when I finally read it. I'm a huge fan of BKV, and think he writes great characters and dialogue. But my main issue with the series is its *tokenism*... whether done wholeheartedly or pointedly, it's just durn annoying...distracting from the greater elements of the story!
