i read the book in less than 48 hours while on my trip in Morocco... i absolutely loved the vivid descriptions.. i could almost picture it in my head as i read along... (was actually quite disappointed by the movie though)..maybe because i had built my own imagination the first time while reading it.. Alice's style is just addictive, easy and gets you so attached to the character.. the emotions that i went through were quite strong... although you feel frusterated several times throughout the story... i felt that i had to let go at the end and feel peace and serenity for the little girl...

The language used to describe the people and places of the English country side is beautiful, and the characters are well developed but Tess, is just so tragic a figure, and she fuels her misfortune to such an extent this book was a little hard to like. To be sure she is a victim of the cruelty of others and Victorian societal mores in general, but she seems to be able to do nothing to improve her happiness, constantly placing her trust in the wrong people which leads to her tragic ending, her life destroyed three times over, leaving an illegitimate child, ruined marriage and murder in her wake. I ended up enjoying the book overall, the writing was beautiful and the tension created drew me in toward the end but if you are looking for a sympathetic heroine or a satisfying ending look elsewhere. I'd rate this 3.5 stars if Goodreads allowed half stars.

This story was told from the perspective of a five-year-old boy who knows nothing of the world outside a room he grew up in with his mother. I don't want to go into too much detail, because I don't want to spoil it, but I really enjoyed this. It shows the incredible lengths a mother will go to in order to protect her child. This story made me laugh, cry, and want to hit someone all at once. I read mixed reviews before diving in. I think the author did a fantastic job of telling the story in the voice of this particular little boy. Some people thought it was unrealistic, but you have to remember that Jack grew up in a different world & take that into account as you read his story. That being said, I think the author pulled it off beautifully.

I loved this book! It was so engrossing I did't even notice the headhopping! Strong female character and a male who isn't intimated by her or has to try to dominate. They are completely equals. The action was so tense and scary it had me on edge the entire book. I DID figure out who the "bad guy" was early on but truly there weren't a lot of clues, I was guessing and guessed right. Hot sex. Dirty language. Tequila! Loved it!
