Good, but too long.

Wow, this is a great book all around. It is kind of the same type of style as the books of Wilson Rawls (Old Yeller, Summer of the Monkeys), but it is less about the animals and more about the family. It is a story of a young man and his relationship with his father and his experiences growing up on a ranch in Colorado. It is actually an autobiographical story but reads more like a novel. It was touching and moving and fun to read, and I'm sure it's one I will read to my boys when they are older.

A little slow at first. Had trouble keeping the four main characters straight. Started it once a couple years ago and set it aside. Second time around I made a few notes to myself who Tom, Paul, Gil, and Charlie were. Once I had them set in my mind it became an enjoyable read. Not a great book; but, not a waste of time either.

I hold the Pamela Aidan Fitzwilliam Darcy - Gentleman series as the pinnacle of Austen fan fiction, which followed the same storyline as the original Pride & Prejudice, but from Darcy's point of view. I was expecting a lot from the Sharon Lathan series, my first foray in Austen fan fiction after a long drought) but after reading the first novel I admit I am bit gobsmacked. Usually I do some research on ratings and recommendations before I purchase books but I have to admit I didn't do so for this series and I wish I had. I'm not really sure how to proceed with reviewing the novel, in order to be fair and not give away any spoilers. For further reviews I suggest visiting LibraryThing. Here are a few observations that may be helpful in deciding whether you would want to read the series: * The novels follow the Darcy's directly after their wedding. * There is a lot of description about the Pemberley estate, manor and history of Darcy's family. * New characters are brought into the story. * Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy contains a lot of romantic language and scenes of intimacy. (I am not a overtly romantic person but I do think I have sensitivity and the quantity of these moments and the verbosity of the characters frankly made me uncomfortable, something that takes quite a lot to do!) * The peak of the story, all the action, comes in the last chapters of the book. * The novel is romance not literature. * Indirectly offers lessons in romance: when, where, why, and how often to say "I love you". * The book covers are certainly pretty. Well, I purchased the series all at once with a Christmas gift card, so they are there sitting on the shelf, so I suppose they will all get read one day (maybe). I think for me that's it for now with Austen fan fiction...but for those who can't get enough please look to the Pamela Aidan series and Syrie James' The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen. Is there anything better than John Irving? Nostalgic, poignant, funny, and someone's penis gets bitten off. One of my all time favorites.
I'm not sure why I waited so long to read this stunning book. I recently downloaded it because of a tweet I saw about it being a top romance book, and I heard good things about both authors. Dark Edge of Honor was a fantastic collaboration, and I hope that these two not only continue to write together, but do it soon. Sergei belongs to a type of zombie world. It's a military world dominated by sacrifice, obedience and order. There are even careless words thrown around by outsiders that the Doctrine followers are on drugs and 'indoctrinated' into their world since birth. The Doctrine is a cruel master, it requires not only absolute obedience, but takes over new worlds that need to be 'saved' and 'shown the way'. Though Sergei knows he's different (he's attracted to men, something that is not allowed in the Doctrine but allowed elsewhere in space) he takes comfort in knowing what's expected of him and how he fits in the gears. Mike (not real name) is an alliance spy and is helping out the Cirokko's (current planet the Doctrine wants) rebels. He's noticed Sergei before his handler orders him to seduce Sergei, but can't help but fall for him the more time they spend together. There are problems, issues, and trust. Sergei's general abuses his power and rapes Sergei... meanwhile Mike doesn't know how he can get him and Sergei out of the political mess.... and doesn't know how he can explain to Sergei that he is a spy, and one that has garnered secrets. This book is powerful. There is rape, torture, violence and limb severing. It's dark at times, and the readers can feel Mike's remorse and Sergei's inner conflict like a knife to the throat. There is a happy ending, but not only is it hard earned, it's bloody and brutal. There are a lot of sexual encounters that balance out the darkness. They are beautifully written and flow so perfectly that I can almost see the scene unfolding before me. I highly recommend to anyone who is interested in m/m romance with a lot of plot and heavy violence. Absolutely gorgeous! *Also on Amazon
