4th grade / 5th grade newbery booktalk This Newbery-award winning book begins with a knife. A knife, and two parents, an older sister, and a man named Jack – and a young boy, barely a toddler yet, but not quite a baby anymore. The knife was bloody, and it did what it was told by the man Jack. The father and mother and sister were bloody, and they lay unmoving in their bedrooms because of the man Jack. The man Jack wiped the blood from the knife, and moved toward the boy’s bedroom to finish his job. But the boy, being a curious and climb-y child, was not there. He had climbed out of his crib, wandered out of the front door and up a hill, holding his pacifier and wearing nothing but a nightshirt. The boy toddled up the hill, passing by and past the fence of a graveyard, where inside, a plump, pale woman made of moonlight, mist, and shadow, called to her husband to come and look at the little boy. Mr. and Mrs. Owens looked at the little boy, wondering where his family might be and why on earth he was wandering a graveyard at night alone at his age – and then, they saw a ghost, which stopped them both in their thoughts. The ghost was of the mother – and she screamed up the hill at the Owenses, “My baby! He is trying to harm my baby!” – and then they saw the man Jack working at the locks of the graveyard gate – and they knew what they had to do. And that is now Nobody Owens, the little boy who escaped a knife and the man Jack, came to live in a graveyard with two ghosts, Mr. and Mrs. Owens, for parents. To learn more about the boy Nobody Owens, and the man Jack and his knife, read The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.
