I did stay up late two nights in a row to finish the book, and as with all of Jodi Picoult's books, it was a controversial topic, well-written, pitted friends and family against each other, and kept me interested. I didn't give the book a higher rating because the plot has become formulaic now for me - I predicted how it would end and I was right, so that took away some of the excitement.

Kay Scarpetta always seems to run into Gault. She sees him and then he quickly disappears. In The Body Farm, Kay and Pete Marino investigate the brutal murder of an 11-year-old girl. The crime appears to resemble Gault's sadistic mode of murder. In the meantime, Kay's niece, Lucy, is interning in the FBI high security-programming lab when security is breached. Cornwell presents so many interesting facts, like the rubber cast of a fingerprint is the mirror image or a reversed image. Cornwell also enters many medical and psychological terms, such as the Munchausen syndrome. The book is long and not as easy reading as James Patterson, but the writing is so much better.

Considering that post-traumatic stress disorder was not really an accepted condition when this book was written, it does a wonderful job of portraying the experiences had at Dresden and throughout the second world war. The writing is often filled with humour and the broken style conveys the disjointed reality with precision. After reading the tale it is hard to imagine any other way that the same story could be told. At times it's filled with nonsense, while others remain severely tragic. The protagonist's obsession with trashy science fiction novels acts as an effective way to give substance and cause to his condition following the war. Overall this book is exceptionally strong in its delivery and Kurt Vonnegut has told an important tale with all the charm, wit and integrity that it deserves. Usually I'm not a fan of war-related tales, but this one proves to be the exception.
Derrida is difficult. I read this to write a paper on Aretxaga's Shattering Silence and found it to be quite illuminating once I read every sentence four times.

I couldn't finish this book- even when I had to sit in jury duty for 2 days- it was that terrible. Not only not written well, but it was unrealistic in that the storyline didn't even maintain consistencies from "Gone With the Wind.".

An interesting read. It is a textbook and a three star rating is about the best I can do for a book like this. It does have some great information and was one the easiest to read that I have had.
I've been busy and haven't had a chance to hunker down with this book, but it hasn't been the easiest thing to get into either. I'm a HUGE fan of the show on Broadway, so that might be clouding my judgement. SO I finally finished it. Took me many months. I'd have to say that I liked it, though just why I'm not sure. Perhaps simply the idea that someone decided to look at the Wicked Witch of the West and wonder just why she was so mean... not just take it for granted... she was green - so therefore she was automatically mean. The stuff with the tick tock - I'm still scratching my head. Did anyone love this book, and care to discuss?

---------------------- Update: April 2, 2012 Weird--I saw this book in our pile to be added to the church library and it struck a chord with me, like "...I think I should read this." So I started to read the book-- It felt vaguely familiar, but I pushed on, and when I finally went to add it to my "currently reading" list on GR, I saw this review, which is 3 years old. Super odd. So apparently I was meant to read it again! I would still give it 4 stars, if only because it reinforced how important it is for the church to simplify, align, and focus its goals to create joyful, serving disciples--get away from the clutter that can happen when churches grow (or just with time). The difference this time is that I've been actively talking about it to a small group at our church and I gave it to our pastor, who has been really thinking about the importance of getting people involved in small groups at the church. Really it's about movement--how do you get people into the church after they visit and get them to know God, know other church members, and finally serve the community and thus the world? It's not an easy task, but it's so important. So the goal of the church (ours and others) should be: love God, love each other, serve the world. Simple, memorable, joyful. I hope Dilworth can get there, and I want to be a part of the journey. So nice, I read it twice! ---------------------- I was referred this book by a pastor at a large church I recently visited and really admire--their vibrancy and passion for what they do is inspiring. "Simple Church" is about doing more with less: using a simple design process for ministry that has the four characteristics of clarity, movement, alignment, and focus. All simple churches need these to thrive. Many churches that are stagnant or declining are too complex and all over the place, diluting their message and trying to be too many things to too many people. There's no forward progression when you become a member. There's no blueprint to take you step by step to become a more devoted Christian. I think my church falls into this category, but I think it has the potential to to grow and thrive like other vibrant churches. I'm not sure exactly how much I can do being a simple layperson and not part of the church administration in trying to make our church more simple, but I'm fairly active within my church and I'm hoping I can help us change our focus a bit. I feel like we're on the edge of making some important changes to improve our spirituality as a church, and this book serves as an excellent guide. I've already recommended it to my pastor!

Well this book was simply a joy to read. Connelly writes a detective story like none other. Kudos
