I've started this book about 3 times now... once on in print and twice as an audio book on road trips. I've enjoyed it every time, but something has always come up to keep me from finishing it. I think now is the time to really make myself sit down and read it. I'm trying to be much more deliberate about my reading choices, so here I go again!

I thought the author created a very clear and believable voice for this story. It felt very real and authentic to me. The story is difficult in that it deals with a barbaric practice and the hard lives of people living in a remote area. But it is rather beautifully written. The lives and relationships of the women are interesting to think about. I am SO grateful that I was born when and where I was!

At the end of this book I felt very pressured to ooh and ahh over how meta it was. The plot certainly was clever, but ultimately it seemed to be as much about Philip Roth's cleverness as about trust and deception. Also, I got my copy from the library and there were a few pages in the middle soaked with blood. That disrupted my reading experience a little.

Not as good as the previous book in the series, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was a really cute love story and hilarious at times. I love the Vikings! They are a perfect mixture of alpha and gamma, just the way I like my heroes. I read historical stuff mainly, so I really enjoyed how the author fused the modern world and the medival world together. Fun read!

According to one of my friends, I don't like this book because I don't like people making fun of the French. I don't think that's it, though - but there's only so much bad faith I can take, and Stephen Clarke used up his entire allowance after about 10 pages.
