I don't think I ever really understood what went on in Biafra. I knew people were starving. I knew there was a war. I just never really "got it", I guess. This book brings it home by showing us the lives of different classes of people (natives, academics, servants, children etc.) They are brought to life in a way that makes what they went through all too personal. Holds the readers interest and tugs on their heartstrings.
Matt and I will be visiting Italy in just 15 days. Did I just write that? Somebody slap me. This trip is a dream come true and a celebration of our 20th year of marriage. With that in mind, I picked up this memoir to whet my appetite for all things Italy. By the middle of the book, I felt numbed by all the food and wine. The small towns ran together. I thought to myself, "how many more fabulous bottles of wine can I read about?" I'm glad I stuck with it. I needed the closure. Mayes and her husband bought a house an renovated it. I enjoyed the descriptors of the final product and seeing the journey to the end. For me, I ended up falling in love with Italy. A little foretaste of what is to come, I hope!

I am not one for true crime, but my love of Sherlock Holmes led me to pick up this audio book for a road trip. This is a collection of true crime and mystery stories, all originally published in the New Yorker and other publications. Other than the first story, Mysterious Circumstances: The Strange Death of a Sherlock Holmes Fanatic, none of the other stories really related to Holmes. Some were more intriguing than others. Trial By Fire, about a man who may have been wrongfully executed by the state of Texas, was heartbreaking. The Chameleon, about a man who was a master impersonator and fraud, was hard to believe, it was so bizarre. All in all, just so-so. But if you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, try to get your hands on Mysterious Circumstances by David Grann, The New Yorker, December 13, 2004.

This book is hard to rate, I liked the story, the book, etc. But...I fucking hate Hawthorne. I hate him. He is shit but that he wrote this book and it was good...if not for the loathing I have for him I would place the book higher on the list...

This is the book in which JK Rowling began to loose it. It was so uninteresting that I still can't bring myself to read 'The half blood prince'.

At first, the author's colloquial writing style bothered me. It was too familiar and "everyday" to take him as an authority on Christ. Some of his examples in the beginning were too repetitious. However, with that said, I ended up learning a lot from this book. Anyone who struggles with how to better improve your personal relationship with Christ and the atonement should read this book. I think I understand the principles of grace, the law of justice vs. the law of faith, and the atonement better. It motivated me to become a better person. It is a quick read that I highly recommend.

It's a lot of work with the allusions, but it is okay. Everyone should read it.

Oh soooo good. The world building this author did to make the story meaningful was incredible. I can only dream to write 1/100th as well as this someday.
