Melissa Marr has taken us deep into the folklore with her third installment and second book in the Wicked Lovely series. In the previous two books Marr sets the stage for the events that take place in “Fragile Eternity.” While the previous books only skim the surface of the folklore, in “Fragile Eternity” Marr pulls us even further into their world. We get to not only see more of the much loved Summer Court but also the Dark and Winter Court. Most of all I was intrigued by the High Court and Queen Sorcha’s way of ruling and conducting business. The characters all underwent a bit of a transformation. Not to spoil it, but Aislinn’s character is not quite what I remember from “Wicked Lovely.” Perhaps the love rectangle and the new status as Summer Queen change things, but I didn’t expect her to be so easily pliable or influenced. Keenan was still a jerk and still single minded. He had one goal and one goal only when it came to himself and his court, forsaking anyone else’s feelings or wishes. Ash and Keenan’s relationship is a complex one but like many relationship based on responsibility and not on love it was doomed to fail. I admire Marr’s writing and analysis into their relationship. She shows how hard it is for both of them to truly get what they want; the push and pull of necessity for power vs necessity for love. Donia and Niall continue to be one of my favorite characters. Donia because she’s so hot and cold, like a mixture of Summer and Winter. Yet, she’s in the book so little that I am intrigued to know more. Especially once the almost courting happens and then doesn’t happen then almost happens again. (Yeah, sorry. I’m trying to avoid spoilers.) Niall’s character is so dark, yet honorable that it makes you appreciate his character so much more. He has a large part in this book and he really steps it up and shows who’s boss. Niall still holds on to that mysterious dark side in this book and as the new Dark King his character has to make some tough choices and step over some toes even. In the end, he and Seth’s friendship is one that I look forward to reading in the next book. Melissa Marr’s writing is as always striking. Well written and descriptive. Pull you into a scene and hold you in it. All her descriptions are palpable and real. I can feel what the characters feel and few authors are truly as successful as she. I enjoy reading her writing and her character’s voices are as distinct as any, really speaking in their unique way. Because Marr had already set the stage in both “Wicked Lovely” and “Ink Exchange” the need to be easy on the folklore was not an option. She delves even deeper bring more and more of the folklore we love into it. But, in my opinion, it seemed too heavy at times making me stop and go back rereading and rethinking parts. Maybe it was because I read it while I was studying for finals, or maybe I just wasn’t in the right mindset. It took me a longer time to read because it was so heavy set with folklore and therefore the semi-rambling review. Nonetheless this is a good read and Melissa pulls another good story for us to enjoy. So quotes: "Tears slipped down her cheeks and she wasn't sure if they were from shame or pain. "I'm sorry." She kept saying it. "I need space from you. I'm sorry...I just...I'm sorry." AND "Is it so wrong to want a queen who loves me?" "No," she whispered. "But it's not working to want two queens to love you." I give this book a 81/100 B Characters- 15 Plot- 16 Writing- 17 Originality- 18 Re-Readability- 15

Really enjoyed this story, and looked forward to reading it. Think this is the best so far.

Books by Pym are always concerned with the inner lives and details of people living quiet, retiring lives in England . As always, there are frustrated love-affairs, slightly uncomfortable dinner parties, and carefully examined friendships. Thirty years passed between Pym’s first novel and this one, and the time has clearly made an impression. Most obviously, there is a sizable queer presence in these books. Moreover, the parties and thoughts of the young people described are finally approaching modernity. I initially hated the main character, a middle-aged woman of delicate tastes and beautiful manners. Snobby, self-contained and selfish, she gives little and requires much from the people around her. She’s an older, less dynamic Lily Bart, and it’s actually quite disturbing. But as the book goes on, the subtleties of her situation and mind are revealed, and she slowly becomes more sympathetic. By the end, her own desperate loneliness has been exposed, but because she finally recognizes the truth—that she *is* lonely, and so are other people—it seemed a happy ending to me.

Favorite story: Lyndon by Amber Dermot. Published the McSweeney's this collection is still a fledgling collection, it culls fiction of newer authors that are published in less considered literary fiction publications.

maybe a half step down from A Game of You but still damn good. I still am iffy on the art, I like more representational stuff, I miss Jack Kirby.

I enjoyed the story of a stereotypical daughter and mother-in-law as a lot of it rang very true for me. I found the story to be quite funny at some times and also feeling quite frustrated for the primary character. But I did not enjoy the ending, it was too contrived and felt like an ending of convenience and not one that required a lot of forethought and consideration.

Forever Free by Joe Haldeman (2000)
Arrogant author craftily responds to the ontological argument. Loved the characters, didn't like stretches of his snarky prose.
